Well how to describe everything that's been going on? Hours of unbearable homesickness interspersed with very pleasant minutes. I thought I would be spending a few days quietly, but it turns out that I'm leading a rackety life, and every day is taken up with dinners, visits, attending concerts and theatres, suppers with companions, etc. My consolation consists of Ziloti, Brodsky (his wife and sister-in-law [1] with whom I'm utterly in love), and Grieg with his wife (enchanting people). But besides these, there are an ever-increasing number of acquaintances and sympathetic people here. I've taken Sapelnikov under my wing for the time being. I've introduced him to numerous people from the world of music here, and everywhere he plays he causes a sensation. He's enormously talented, I'm more and more convinced of this each day. After Berlin he will be going directly to see you in Petersburg. I'm terribly fond of him. It's hard to imagine a more kind and sympathetic young man. Now to the point. I'm sending you in the form of an autograph a letter which he received from Menter yesterday [2]. She's terribly in love with him, and from the humorous tone of the letter it's clear that he is sympathetic to her. As for the music I've heard, there's a new opera here by Weber, i.e. an opera he left in the form of sketches, and only now has it been finished, arranged and orchestrated. The music is very sweet, but the subject is inane (it's entitled: "Die Drei Pintos") [3]. I've heard one quartet concert, where they played a quartet [4] by the remarkably gifted Italian Ferrucio Busoni. We met and very quickly became on good terms. There was a musical evening at Brodsky's, at which I was delighted by a new sonata by Grieg [5]. Grieg and his wife are so curious, sympathetic, interesting and original in a way which can't be expressed in a letter. I consider Grieg to be immensely talented. Today I'm dining with Grieg at Brodsky's; in the evening there's a special concert in aid of a foundation for a memorial to Mendelssohn. Tomorrow there's a public rehearsal for the Gewandhaus concert (Rubinstein's symphony is on the programme), then I'm giving my local friends a dinner in a famous local restaurant, and at 5 o'clock I'm off to Berlin. Wait for my letters from Berlin. Anyway, Sapelnikov will describe it all to you. Please, put Sapelnikov at ease, and allow him to play for you; you'll be astounded.

Regarding the money, I'll sort out the telegram right away [6].

Lord, how tired I am!

Kisses and hugs to you, Kolya and Bob!

P. Tchaikovsky
