Most respected, most kind, dear
Adolf Osipovich!

More than a month has passed since I said goodbye to you. How many times I have intended to write to you in order to thank you once more for your touching sympathy, and for your endless courtesy and kindness — but my life in Paris was filled with all manner of commotion that I was obliged to refrain from correspondence with even my closest relatives, and to postpone the pleasure of conversing with you in writing until a more favourable time. At the present moment I am passing through Vienna. I have an enormous journey ahead of me to Volochisk, Kharkov, Rostov, Vladikavkaz, and Tiflis, and I have stopped here for a few hours in order to rest. My stay in Paris was marked by a whole array of major successes, and, of course, will leave me with indelible memories, but Parisian life, these endless dinners, soirées, visits, this noise, that inconceivable commotion, has tired me to the extreme, to the point where ultimately I start to lose my memory and reasoning. Then I was in London, where the concert, in which I conducted two of my works, was a great success, and from where, despite many lucrative offers, I decided to go directly to Russia, and above all to Tiflis, where close relatives and friends are expecting me. In April (at the end) I shall take myself off to the country to work. I hope to see you in Prague in November. If you write me a word about how your health is, and how your dear wife and son are doing, then I shall be very, very grateful to you (Address Moscow, P. I. Jurgenson, for forwarding to P. I. T.).

And now let me mentally hug you warmly, most kind Adolf Osipovich, and say that until my grave I shall not forget and will not cease to appreciate your friendly attention to me. Thank you, thank you!!!

Your deeply respectful and affectionate,

P. Tchaikovsky
