Most respected Ivan Aleksandrovich!

I have recourse to come to you with a very delicate request, which causes my face to blush with embarrassment. At our last meeting, you suggested that I should be rewarded now for the music for our ballet. Then I shied away this new manifestation of your continued patronage towards me, because I was somehow ashamed to accept a reward for work that had barely begun. Now my work has progressed considerably, and these circumstances, as well as others which would be long and uninteresting to describe, oblige me to turn to you with a request, if possible, to see to it that I can receive the amount agreed upon during my forthcoming stay in Petersburg on the 20th and 21st inst. The circumstances to which I have just referred have developed in such a way that, notwithstanding the most favourable conditions, I am currently in urgent need of money. I very much did not want to make this request to you, and when I was in Moscow two or three days ago I attempted to arrange my financial affairs somehow differently — but I was unsuccessful, and now I must overcome the shame tormenting me, and ask you to show me the kindness that I had so recently turned down.

For God's sake forgive me, and fulfil my desire, if possible. Today I am starting on the fourth scene. I beg you for a word or two in reply.

Your sincerely devoted and respectful,

P. Tchaikovsky
