Lеiрzig.

At the Berlin Philharmonic Society I played the string Serenade and "Francesca". They had great success, although I clearly heard some forceful whistles after "Francesca". The performance was splendid. Klindworth said that I was an "ausgezeichneter Dirigent" [1]. How's that?

Klindworth is ready to come to Moscow next season for one of the following concerts of our choice: 9 and 30 December or 6 and 20 January. Regarding the fee, I had to offer more than anticipated, because the concert means that he must leave his Conservatory for at least 10 days. He was very happy with this invitation. The programme will be Wagnerian. I've received further confirmation from Dvořák that he's agreed to come and conduct an entire concert; he doesn't travel alone and his wife accompanies him, therefore his fee will have to be increased. But I don't think this is important. It's good that we can even advertise a spring programme with such names as Massenet, Dvořák and even Klindworth. I'm not attempting to invite Brahms. How good that would be!

I'm in Leipzig for a meeting with the Brodskys and to write letters. The day after tomorrow I'm off to Geneva. My mood is foul, and I'm inordinately homseick. I was consoled in Berlin by Artôt and dear old Hugo Bock. What a lovely dear fellow!

Today I'm completely overwhelmed by news of the death of K. Yu. Davydov.

It turns out that my 4th symphony produced a sensation in Dresden. I'm sending you Hartmann's second article about it.

Regards to everyone!

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky

For the present keep using Wolff's address.

P. S.. You should shortly be receiving four of my trunks and suitcases, by express. Please pay for them.
