Dear friend!

I was extremely happy to receive your letter [1], and to learn from it that you are still in good health. I, on the other hand, have been sitting in the country, and working hard almost without interruption on scoring the ballet [2]. I only managed 2 days in Moscow. I went to a meeting of the directorate. Tretyakov complained the whole time that we had little money and will end the year in deficit. Oh what a son of a bitch he is — the miser. For some time now I've begun to harbour a slight but very persistent antipathy towards him. And don't let him keep you waiting!

Did you know that we have a new inspector, who peculiarly wears a skirt instead of trousers, and goes by the name of Aleksandr Ivanovich Hubert-Batalin? Seriously though, after a long hiatus, Aleksandra Ivanovna acceded to our request and agreed to take up the inspectorship. The papers approving this have already gone to the grand duke [3]. And that's not all. I will also tell you that Karlusha is bearing his misfortune, or rather, his grievance (because an award of 3000 is no misfortune), with pusillanimity. Specifically, at the last meeting he spoke with such malice about those he considers to be the instigators of his removal, that I found it all very unpleasant. And he vainly attempted to discredit Taneyev, who is hardly a monster of nature in my eyes!

Something most unpleasant has happened regarding the romances dedicated to Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich set to his words [4]. I can barely contain my indignation at the order, or rather the disorder, that prevails in your Khokhlov kingdom [5]. In every barrel of honey there's not just a spoonful, but a whole barrel of tar. Please do something.

Keep well; I bow deeply to Natalya Nikolayevna.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky
