Frolovskoye, town of Klin

Dear Modya!

I'll be very glad to see you on the 18th. But how glad I'd be if you were to bring Laroche with you!

I went to Moscow yesterday to hear Arensky's "A Dream on the Volga". A wonderful opera! Some scenes are so good that I was truly moved to tears. The dream scene in particular is astonishing. I've just written Vsevolozhsky strongly recommending this opera for Petersburg.

The telegraph only exists in order to confound and confuse. Yesterday, through some telegraphic muddle, Anatoly and I had en extremely unpleasant misunderstanding. I understood that he needed see me today, and therefore, having missed lots of important business, I arrived in the morning — to find he wasn't there!! I don't understand it at all. I went with Aleksey to see the doctor. The latter said it wasn't consumption; God willing he hasn't been stricken. But then, what is this strange cough?

I've already turned down conducting in Pest, Frankfurt and Mainz; I wrote to Wolff that I was turning down America too. All these sacrifices are for the sake of the Petersburg theatre. Well, what if inspiration doesn't strike? My mood now is such that I'm inclined to think it won't.

Please, tell Bob not to be angry with me for not going to Klin to see him. I'm tormented by the thought that he's angry with me.

"Hamlet" is coming along. But what horrible work this is! Lord, how I want to see Huttemans.

I hug you, Kolya, Bob and Uka.

P. Tchaikovsky

Yury has risen terribly in my estimation.
