You're probably angry that it's been so long since I sent you any proofs. They were were held up because of my amendments to "The Maid of Orleans", which are now, thank God, already on the way to Petersburg. Tomorrow I'm sending you the proofs of the "Vespers", and the six pieces. Both are very well engraved, but on those pages from the "Vespers" which have been engraved by Noske it's very funny that he doesn't recognise the letter u and he puts g instead — as a consequence of which many words have come out very oddly. I want to do the 2nd proofs, and if you can guarantee that everything I mark in the 2nd proofs will be done, then the third won't be needed at all. I ask you to send me the 2nd proofs in book form, and not as separate sheets.

Please, golubchik, have someone find out why the "New Time" bookstore hasn't sent me the first issues of "The Story of Peter the Great"? I've had a chit for ages, but the thing itself still isn't there. I received an offer from André today to give my compositions to him. What a bird this is! And what a strange town. It's only fit for publishing filthy operettas, and not my profoundly ingenious works. I replied to him with a courteous refusal, and referred him to you.

I embrace you. See you in 3 weeks.
Unfortunately I did not have the time to look through the 3 last movements of Op. 11. Please have a good musician undertake the revision.

I found many mistakes in the concerto!!!

Notes and References

 1. The autograph was advertised for sale by International Autograph Auctions Europe S.L. (Marbella) on 29 November 2022 [1]. It had previously been auctioned on 14 November 2008 at the Hôtel Drouot, Paris [2], and was subsequently owned by the Musée des lettres et manuscrits in Paris, until the closure of that institution in 2015.
 2. Tchaikovsky had been correcting new editions of his Piano Concerto No. 1 and String Quartet No. 1 for the German publisher Rahter.
