Dear and most respected Sir!
I have just received your letter in which you inform me of your intention to mount my "Queen of Spades" on the stage of the National Theatre in Prague. Permit me to express to you my profound and keen appreciation for this new attention that you wish to show me. God grant that my opera will win the acclaim of your excellent audience in Prague, whose sympathetic welcome in 1888 I shall never forget.

I have assigned to Monsieur Pollini the rights concerning performances on all stages in Germany and in Austria-Hungary. I am going to write to him forthwith and ask him to moderate his terms so far as possible.

In reiterating to you once more the expression of my joy and of my keen gratitude, and asking you to remind me to all my friends from Prague, I am, Mr Director, your devoted and eternally grateful servant,
