Most respected Pavel Leontyevich!

I should like to know exactly when the concert I will be conducting in Petersburg is, i.e. in which month? I would ask you to decide this matter forthwith and write to me. I'd hoped to speak with you and Auer about this face to face, but, it seems I need to make it to Petersburg even more quickly. It transpires that the most convenient time for me would be November or December, but especially November between the 10th and 30th. I'll also ask you to write whether there will be a virtuoso at the concert under my direction, and if so, which one, and what will he be playing? I should now be very glad to have accurate answers to all these questions.

Jurgenson has sent you the score of "The Voyevoda", because there aren't any good copyists, and those that there are, are busy. But it goes without saying that I ask you to arrange for the copying out of the parts of "The Voyevoda". I have no wish at all to abuse the generosity of the Petersburg Musical Society, and I will bear the costs of the copying myself.

And so, dear Pavel Leontyevich, I will be waiting for your notification about how to fill out the existing concert programme (the 4th symphony and my two "Voyevodas"), which virtuoso I'll be dealing with, and when the concert is to take place.

Once again I ask, if possible, for it to be scheduled for November.

Sincerely devoted,

P. Tchaikovsky
