The day after tomorrow I am leaving for Kiev, Warsaw, Hamburg, Prague and Amsterdam. I need to know exactly when the last rehearsals of "The Queen of Spades" are to begin. The fact is that from Warsaw, where I have to conduct a concert, I am going to Hamburg to attend a performance of "Onegin". But thus far we have not yet fixed the date of the first performance of this opera. Monsieur Pollini writes to me that it will be in the 2nd half of January, that is to say, between 15 and 30 January. Now please take into consideration that on 10 or 11 February I have to conduct the orchestra in Amsterdam and The Hague. I fear that between Hamburg and Amsterdam I will be prevented from coming to Prague on time, or at least that I will be unable to fulfil my arrangements as intended. Consequently it would be best for me if you could fix the premiere of "The Queen of Spades" on or around 23 February. Then I can arrive in Amsterdam at least a week before the premiere. However, if such a thing is impossible, I can withdraw from Holland, but in any case I can only come to you after "Onegin" in Hamburg. I must confess, however, that I am very keen to travel to Holland, because the concerts in which I have promised to take part cannot be postponed.

And so please, dear Sir, give me a definitive response, which I ask you to address to Warsaw, Hôtel d'Europe.
