Saint Petersburg

You probably already know from Osip Ivanovich that I'm in Petersburg [1]. I've postponed Holland until next year [2]. The point is that I want to catch up with orchestrating some numbers from the new ballet, which I've promised will be played at a local Musical Society concert on 29 February [3]. Had I gone to Holland, then I would have only returned in the first week of Lent. Besides this I only enjoyed myself the first three days in Paris, while I was busy with the sextet; once I sent it to you I was beset by homesickness, and decided to leave for home as soon as possible. I leave tomorrow for Maydanovo [4]. I didn't have the thousand francs that were wired to me, and I had to borrow a further 350 francs from Ziloti, to whom I ask you to transfer as much as possible now in Paris (14, Rue Richepanse) in his name.

Has Taneyev finished the arrangement of "Iolanta"? If not, then is it possible to start engraving what he has already done?[5] Anyway, I hope to find at Maydanovo letters forwarded to me from Paris. I've stayed here far longer than I intended.

I embrace you.

Yours P. Tchaikovsky

Notes and References

  1. Tchaikovsky had arrived in Saint Petersburg from Paris on 21 January/2 February 1892.
  2. The planned tour of Holland did not ultimately take place.
  3. Tchaikovsky was orchestrating eight numbers to create a Suite from the ballet The Nutcracker, to replace the destroyed symphonic ballad The Voyevoda. The Suite was eventually heard a week later than scheduled, at the ninth symphony concert of the Saint Petersburg branch of the Russian Musical Society on 7/19 March 1892, conducted by the composer.
  4. The composer left Saint Petersburg on 27 January/8 February 1892, to return home to Maydanovo.
  5. Sergey Taneyev's arrangement of the vocal-piano reduction of the opera Iolanta was completed at the end of January/beginning of February 1892, and published by Jurgenson in April the same year.
