Dear friend Sergey Ivanovich!

I'm very grateful to you for pointing out the errors in "Iolanta" [1]. I have found a plethora of the same!!! To hell with it! As the proof reader is none other than myself, there's absolutely nobody who can help me with this! I can't rely on anyone else. I'm currently immersed in the proofs of the full scores of "Iolanta" and "The Nutcracker". What torture! I've spent the whole of this evening on two pages, and got into such a muddle!!! I can't move until the main part of it is finished, i.e. the first proofs. It's most important that the matter is concluded quickly, and I'm in constant communication with Jurgenson's engravers: not just in writing but also in person, in order to unravel the confusion. Nevertheless, I still hope to visit Selishche, before your departure of course.

I was very upset by the death of S. M. Tretyakov, who I'd seen so recently in rude health no more than 3½ weeks ago in Petersburg. I went to his funeral.

The symphony isn't progressing [2].

And so I hope to see you soon at Selishche [3]. Thank you for the instructions on how to travel there.

I embrace you!

P. Tchaikovsky
