25 August

I've corrected the full score of the ballet [1] up to page 457, and will probably send them tomorrow. I'm afraid that there's been some more confusion. Why did you send me Tea (the Chinese dance from the suite)? It has after all been re-engraved and the new imprint has been thoroughly corrected. Now I really wish that they had been in print, because perhaps I'd notice something. Let the second proof be printed from new plates. As for "Coffee", i.e. the Arabian dance, then this should also be re-engraved.

You misunderstand me. I didn't ask you to write to Gutmann about opus 23, but about 23 September. After all, he telegraphed, you remember, whether I could give the concert on the 23rd — well, I'd prefer it to be later. Anyway it doesn't matter. In any case, I've decided the following: I'll stay here for the whole of this week, and at a terrible cost to my nerves, hope to finish everything and pass it to you on Monday 31st. If I receive the last imprint no later than Saturday then I'll bring them with the first proofs on the 31st, and by the evening I could already deliver the second proofs. On the morning of the 31st I can also bring:

1) My simplified arrangement of the ballet — it's nearly ready.
2) Taneyev's arrangement, carefully checked [2].
3) Langer's , also checked [3].

I'm looking over the corrections to the vocal-piano reduction of "Iolanta" today and will send them tomorrow.

I gather from Modest's letter [4] that he'll soon be in Moscow. It's likely that he will see you. Please give him 200 rubles, which I owe him on account as payment for the libretto of "Iolanta"!

Please pay for Kreizer's laundry. Actually I need to make a lot of demands on your money, at least 800 rubles. Until we meet!

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky

Please tell Modya that I'm here until 31st August.
