At the present moment I find myself at Menter's. From conversations with her I have concluded that she would be willing to play at one of your concerts in Petersburg. What do you think about this? It seems to me that this would produce something of a sensation and increase interest in your concerts. I know that in February and March she will be playing in Holland and Paris. Consequently it would be more convenient to invite her earlier or later. I don't know whether you are still closely involved with the fortunes of the firm Becker [1], but so far as I understood from her words, she has no association with Schroder and would be willing to play on a Becker.

We will discuss this with you in 2 weeks' time in Petersburg, but if you want to write to her then she will be here in the meantime. I know that all places in your concerts are already taken, but, to paraphrase Gogol, the mayor always finds a place, and she is something of a mayoress' amongst pianists.

Dear, kind Pavel Leontyevich — what of Laroche. You haven't forgotten?!![2]

Sincerely devoted,

P. Tchaikovsky
