П. Чайковский

7 December 1892

Deeply respected Yelena Pavlovna!

I would very, very much wish to spend this evening with you [2], but, unfortunately, I feel utterly ill, jaded, and absolutely unfit for company [3]

Give my compliments and kind regards to Sasha, Konstantin Ilyich [4] and to your dear guests.

Sincerely devoted,

P. Tchaikovsky

Notes and References

  1. The autograph was advertised for sale by Kotte Autographs, Rosshaupten, in January 2021 [1]. At the time of publication of П. И. Чайковский. Полное собрание сочинений, том XVI-Б (1979), the autograph was in the possession of Mr Ivan Semyonov in Saint Petersburg.
  2. The Glazunov family lived at Kazanskaya Street 8–10 in Saint Petersburg, approximately a hundred metres from the Kazan Cathedral.
  3. Tchaikovsky might well have had a hangover from the banquet (or its continuation elsewhere) the night before, laid on for him by the Mariinsky troupe after the premieres of both Iolanta and The Nutcracker.
  4. Yelena's husband, and father of Aleksandr Glazunov.
