11 December 1892 Dear friend Vasily Ilyich!
Amid the frenzy of rehearsals I read your letter [1] without sufficient attention, and formed the impression that you had invited me to conduct on 23rd January, and I asked Kashkin to tell you that this was impossible. Now I have read your letter again, and see that you were calling on me to listen to the 4th symphony on this date. Alas! I cannot do this either, as I shall be in Odessa [2]. It is not possible to cancel the Odessa concert. Could my symphony not be postponed until the following season? As for the charity concert, then I shall appear promptly [3]. Until we meet, your devoted, P. Tchaikovsky |
