Mon cher ami!

My dear friend!

I do not know whether you received my long letter [1], written about a month ago, in which I detailed the various impressions that your music has on me. Since I have not received from you a line acknowledging receipt of my letter, I am afraid that, 1) either it has not been received at your address, 2) or else that I have unintentionally offended you by criticising your works too harshly.

Regarding your quartet [2], which I received soon after sending my letter, I have only been able to become acquainted with it these last few days, because all this time I have been obliged to travel.

First of all permit me to thank you sincerely for the honour of having this work dedicated to me. Be assured that I could not be more appreciative of this honour, and I am deeply touched. Therefore it gives me particular pleasure to tell you that I like this quartet very much, and that now, more than ever, I believe I can encourage you as strongly as possible along the arduous path of composition. I particularly appreciate the skill you have demonstrated in the first movement. Courage, dear friend! I am sure you will achieve fine results. I kiss you tenderly. A thousand compliments to your delightful wife.
