Dear friend Karl Yulyevich!
I come to you with a serious request. Laroche, who, despite the depths of his mental and artistic collapse, still remains a man with tremendous reserves of artistic potential, who inspires a fervent sympathy in my friendly heart. I consider him incapable (at least at the moment) of any sort of electic and complex endeavour, but I have no doubt whatsoever that he can once again take up the position of professor of music history at the Conservatory with brilliance and success. It would not be difficult for him to lecture brilliantly on this subject twice a week. He could also resume his place as secretary of the council. The situation is such that if he does not have a helping hand in time, then he will ultimately become bogged down in the swamp of Oblomovism. I can merely render him platonic support, while you have the opportunity to render him significant assistance, by putting him in the aforementioned position. Do this, golubchik! Let us try once more to save this clever head from ruin! Who knows — perhaps, there is still the opportunity to make Laroche not only a useful, but a brilliant figure. For my part, I would consider it a magnificently friendly service if you find it possible to carry out my request!

I shake your hand warmly, ask you to kiss the hands of Aleksandra Arkadyevna, and remain your steadfastly devoted

1. P.S. "Mazepa" is completely finished; now I will be idle for a long while.

2. P.S. Laroche will be grateful, even if he is only engaged on the most modest salary.
