Because I still don't know when you will be staying at Verbovka, consequently the question of my visit there is becoming terribly complicated. At the beginning of September I'm required in Petersburg to do some concerts for the Musical Society. They need me to have a meeting with the directors, and Peterssen [1] is demanding to known when I'm available, and so I, having decided that you'll probably be coming to Petersburg with Modest at the end of August, replied that I will be at their service at the beginning of September. On the other hand, Anatoly has been expecting me for a long time, and always wants me to see their place in the country, where they'll be staying until 15 September. I promised him (even before I received your telegram) that I'd go there in early September from Petersburg. And so therefore, in all probability, I shall not manage to come to Verbovka in the first half of September. In any case when I come back to Petersburg from abroad, I shall need to know from Modest everything to do with your move and your new arrangements (about which I'm very interested and concerned). I expect there will be a letter waiting for me there from Anatoly as well. Depending how he writes to me, i.e. the tone, I will decide whether to go to him immediately, or whether to spend a few days beforehand at Verbovka [2].

In any event we shall see each other soon.

P. Tchaikovsky

At the very moment I'm writing this, Lyolya Apukhtin's funeral is taking place!!! Although not unexpected, his death is still alarming and painful all the same. There was a time when he was my closest friend.

  1. Pavel Peterssen, the programming director for the Saint Petersburg branch of the Russian Musical Society.
  2. Tchaikovsky eventually decided to visit his brother Anatoly at Mikhaylovskoye from 9/21 to 17/29 September 1893, instead of going to Verbovka.
