I am sorry not to be able to receive you at my home at 7 o'clock. Rubinstein arrived this morning, and the Conservatory professors are throwing him a dinner, which I am obliged to attend. Besides this, I must warn you that neither now, nor in the foreseeable future, will I be able to fulfil you request, despite my fervent wish to do so. There are certain periods, certain states of mind, when it is impossible to work. I find myself precisely in this state and nothing in the world at this moment could release me from this sort of moral and intellectual torpor which utterly stands between me and any hint of artistic creativity. I put this to you as an artist and as a friend, and ask you not to press the matter. It pains me to refuse you what I have previously done for many other persons who were indifferent to me and your inferiors in every respect.

But I now propose to you a solution to everything, which is that Lishin should compose the music for your piece.  I am sure that he, who knows you so well, will do exactly as you require. I authorise you to insert on the concert bills that the interpolated piece is by Lishin, if he should so desire. Furthermore, in order to talk at greater length and in more detail, I ask you to call on me tomorrow morning between 10 and 11, or between 7 and 10 in the evening. If Lishin will grant me the pleasure of coming to see me, I should be very glad. Please forgive me for causing you this disappointment. I am most upset myself.
