I have completely unexpectedly arrived in Paris for one day. I left Clarens a day earlier than I had planned so that the letters which I asked you to send to me in Rome should not lie there too long. During the last days in Clarens I suffered greatly from my old ailment, i.e. gastric catarrh. I completely lost my appetite and slept badly, all of which had the most unfavourable effect on my state of mind. The doctor who had treated me a month ago in Petersburg told me that the state of excessive irritability which I suffer from is in large part due to that ailment. Last year I underwent a highly successful treatment in Vichy under the supervision of Dr Saligoux for whom I have highest esteem. Before travelling to Naples, to a country where I do not speak the language, I decided to consult with Saligoux and ask him to prescribe me a régime [1] which I could follow while living in Italy, as well as indicating a suitable remedy and course of treatment. I decided to undertake the trip to Paris as I know from the considered judgment of my sister who lived for a long time in Geneva, just how bad the doctors there are. In the meantime I have neglected my illness and the treatment, which I submitted myself to this past summer in Kamenka, did not help at all, possibly because I was not in a sufficiently calm frame of mind. My brother, who will soon have to part with me and who would have very much preferred to leave me here in a completely healthy state, persuaded me to make the trip. We decided to do it on Sunday, left yesterday, Monday, and are already here today. I have just sent a commissionaire to locate my Saligoux and am awaiting his reply. I will see him tomorrow and then leave directly for Rome either tomorrow or, if there is no time, the day after tomorrow. If I leave tomorrow then on Saturday I will receive the letter which you telegraphed me about. I left instructions in Clarens for any letters which might arrive after my departure from there to be forwarded directly to Rome, where I plan to stay only a few days. I will write to you as soon as I arrive in Rome.

On my journey here I fondly imagined I might attend a good concert or one of the good new operas (for example "Le Roi de Lahore"), but, as always happens in such cases, it turned out that today is a Relâche [2] at the Grand Opéra and there are no concerts at all. The Opéra Comique is presenting three little pieces of some kind while the Théâtre Lyrique has Paul et Virginie by Massé, whoever he is, all of which has very little interest for me. So I will have to leave without having heard anything interesting. Still, I will not conceal from you the fact that Paris, as ever before, makes the most pleasant impression on me: what a wonderful city it is, full of life and movement! We travelled from the train station to the Hôtel via the long Rivoli street – how magnificent it is!

Farewell, dear Nadezhda Filaretovna. Until the next letter. If there is time I will write to you tomorrow. Otherwise, until Rome! Despite my indisposition, which, by the way, is not really very serious, I would feel much better were it not for the fact that I have to part soon with my brother, which pains me and breaks my heart. In Clarens I completed the orchestration of the first act of "Onegin" and sent it to Rubinstein. Farewell, my dear friend

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky

I am unsealing this letter as I have received your telegram which my landlady has just forwarded from Clarens. I had a kind of premonition that there would be a telegram and just in case I gave her my address here. You will of course have received all my letters from Clarens and will know that I received your first lettre chargée [3] last Monday. I am terribly ashamed to be causing you so much worry. Good, dear Nadezhda Filaretovna, forgive me!
