Thursday. 24/12 January 1878

The most powerful mistral is blowing today. The sea is so stormy that it's awful to watch. After lunch we went to the port and walked along the wall. The waves lashed and rolled over us several times. Alyosha came to us after lunch and walked with us, then he went at 6 o'clock. A most strange relationship has developed between us. I feel sorry for him, but at the same time I cannot help but be angry with him. The fact that we don't all live together is a great inconvenience for us. For example, we are now deprived of the opportunity to go to cafés in the evenings and read the newspapers. "The Barber of Seville" was on at the theatre today. Both Modya and I very much wanted to go there, mainly because the role of Rosina is being sung by a Russian, Rayevskaya. Much had been written about this in the newspapers, with predictions that this wasn't a role for her, that she would be hissed, etc. We wanted to entrust a local girl, Margerita, with looking after Kolya after he fell asleep, and she agreed to sit for him the whole evening. But the wind howled so terribly that it was awful to be away from Kolya for too long. I expected the house to fall down. Finally, Modya persuaded me to go off by myself. I went, but my heart was always elsewhere, and after the first scene of the 2nd act I dashed home. I found Modest had already started to worry about me. The wind was actually so wild and raging that it was frightening to walk. (Ravevskaya was very decent and had great success).

Friday. 25/13 January

I spent an atrocious night. It's impossible to describe the terrible strength of the furious wind. My window was rattling and making such a noise that I barely slept. But I'd just fallen asleep when the window opened with a terrible crash, followed by the door. I was alarmed and leapt to my feet. I locked the window, fell asleep, and it was the same story again. This went on until 4 o'clock in the morning. Finally, I decided to close the shutters and fasten them, leaving just the window open. Only after that could I fall asleep. It's remarkable that, despite all it strength, this wind is so warm that I didn't suffer in the least from having the window open.

The wind has died down today, but the still is still raging quite violently. Outside it was as hot as summer.

Modest is so sweet! He's now giving lessons to Alyosha every day, and working him hard. It's now 8 o'clock in the evening. Modest is reading the "Daily News", while I'm writing to you. They took Kolya's picture this morning. He's so sweet!

Until tomorrow, my dear fellow. I kiss you on the lips, eyes and neck. Then I kiss you again.

Saturday 26/14 January

In the morning they brought me a letter from Rubinstein, which infuriated me by its tone. I was very agitated and wrote an answer, which Modest was very pleased with. How right I am to dislike this man! He is so cold, heartless and insistent that he's being my benefactor! I've explained to him once and for all that I don't owe quite so much to him as he thinks. It will be quite horrible for me to fall under his yoke again in Moscow. My letter today has come out short. I finished the instrumentation. The day passed in its usual fashion. Alyosha's situation is the same. I hug you, my dear fellow.

Yours P. Tchaikovsky

I'm enclosing Rubinstein's letter for you.
