Florence, poste restante.

Dear friend!

I've done the proofs and sent them as you wanted; however, in order for Kashkin to do another decent proofread, and regardless, I would ask you to let Taneyev play these pieces, and if he notices any mistakes, to correct them. Therefore I think that you no longer need to send me anything. I'm quite unconcerned about the sonata, since Klindworth has it. From what I've seen of the Liturgy, if the rest is just as well engraved, then you can do without me. The piano reduction of the symphony will be proofread by Taneyev, and I trust him. Incidentally, please don't forget to dedicate the 6 romances to Anatoly, the 12 pieces to Modest, and the symphony to my best friend.

It's so annoying! In Petersburg I forgot my draft manuscript of three movements from the suite, and I'm most concerned that it doesn't disappear. I wrote to brother Anatoly in order to hunt it down, but I've had no news. This is all the more annoying because I wrote 2 more movements here, so that I could take up the orchestration in Florence.

Although I'm remarkably well here and in good spirits, and I don't ever recall time when I've ever felt as well physically and mentally as I do now, I'm going abroad next week all the same, on the 14th. The reason for this is that my sister and her husband and older children will be leaving soon to spend two months in Moscow and Petersburg. I've had no news whatsoever from Moscow. Why didn't the second concert take place last week? Was Rubinstein unwell? Aren't you intending to leave? Lord! How fortunate are those who aren't obliged to live in our dear capitals! I've been hunting twice already, and tomorrow I'm going after wolves. There will be stalking horses and more than 30 marksmen! This is much more fun than six hours of theoretical classes, or sitting in Jurgenson's office, even if it's as the owner. Write to Florence, poste restante.

Yours P. Tchaikovsky
