1) Introduzione e fuga.
2) Scherzo.
3) Andante melanconico.

My dear friend!

Could you by any chance take out a subscription for me for one month's worth of the "Moscow Gazette" from 1st December to 1st January? My address is as follows: Florence, Viale dei Colli, Restaurant Bonciani. I asked a friend of the Davydovs to rent me some modest lodgings somewhere on the outskirts of town, and he writes to tell me that until 1 January he has rented a charming couple of rooms with a wonderful view of Florence and its environs [1]. Owing to my poor health the time until my departure abroad has been rather spun out. I'm going tomorrow. I'll stop off for 24 hours in Vienna and for 24 hours in Venice. I shall remain in Florence for as much time as I care to, and will not feel tentative about it, i.e. if I miss Russia then I'll hurry back to the cosy little spot that is always ready for me in Kamenka. But I suppose that I won't feel out of sorts in Florence since I intend to be working very diligently. That's the thing, my treasure. Would you be in a position to find out from the catalogues if Mermet's opera on the subject of "Jeanne d'Arc" was printed in Paris. That opera was put on shortly after the opening of the new opera house, i.e. 6 — 7 years ago, or just maybe a little less. As far as I recall, it was a spectacular flop, but despite all that I think it was still put in print [2] . Please, don't forget to give me an answer to this question in your next letter. I hope that, as usual, you will spoil me with your letters. To be on the safe side, pass on my address to Rubinstein, Albrecht, Taneyev and in general to all who would wish to enter into correspondence with me. I've completed the sketches of my suite [3]; it will comprise five short movements:

1) Introduction and fugue.
2) Scherzo.
3) Andante melanconico [4].
4) March of the Lilliputians.
5) Dance of the Giants.

I must declare that I'd very much like it to be performed in Moscow in this current season and, while you're waiting, may the piano reduction [5] be done and the performing parts compiled and printed! Or rather, as you'd wish.

Gentle greetings to Sofya Ivanovna.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky

Notes and References

  1. Through these evasions Tchaikovsky hid from Jurgenson the actual identity of the individual who was providing the apartment in Florence. It was, of course, not some anonymous male contact of the Davydovs, but Nadezhda von Meck (see Letters 966 and 967).
  2. The date of the inauguration of the new Paris opera house (i.e. 1875) and the prestigiously mounted premiere there in the following year of Mermet's Jeanne d'Arc (which indeed nevertheless failed) was rather more recent than Tchaikovsky estimated; he did, however, correctly recall that the opera had been published (see note 5 to Letter 976).
  3. The Suite No. 1 in D minor, Op. 43; concerning what is meant by "sketches" see note 4 to Letter 966.
  4. An apparent slip in the composer's use of Italian; see note 5 to Letter 966.
  5. The piano score market — that is, of piano arrangements of orchestral and chamber works — was a lucrative one for publishers. It made concert music more extensively available to a domestic clientele for home performance. The arrangement might be for the piano duet format (as would be so, in due course, with the present suite) or piano solo.
