Адрес: Florence, Viale dei Colli, Restaurant Bonciani.

Dear and cherished Karlusha!

How are you getting on? What's happening at the Conservatory? How are your wife and children? What about Yevgeny Onegin? In a week's time it will be staged [2]. Write to me, my golubchik, and tell me how the performance goes, which members of the cast distinguish themselves, and conversely, which of them manage to cover themselves with shame.

I am living in absolute solitude. I see no one apart from my Alyosha. My small flat is out of town, in a wonderful area from which one can look down on the city itself and the environs, and which has a garden with roses and flourishing green grass. Today, however, the weather is so repulsive, with rain and snow, that I think enviously of a fine winter's day in Moscow. I am writing a suite for orchestra and I am working on this quite assiduously [3]. Sometimes I walk into the wonderful and nice city, and look in at the picture galleries. To be honest, although sometimes, when I think about you and other friends, I feel sad, still I am completely happy, I enjoy my solitude and do not regret at all, not for one moment, that I left Moscow. I spent my best years in Moscow, I love the place very much, but to have to live there now would only cause me agony and depression. Only in the countryside or abroad, where no one knows me, can I be calm. Indeed, I would not be able to live in Moscow as I did before, and given the new circumstances, that city is quite unbearable for me. There is only one thing I miss here, and that is music. If from time to time it were possible to hear good music in this place, then I could spend whole months here without feeling bored. In fact, it is precisely for the sake of music that within two weeks or so I shall be leaving here—but I don't know where I shall go, so for the time being write to me while I'm still here. Write to me, even if only briefly, about what you are doing, as well as about "Onegin". The address is: Florence, Viale dei Colli, Restaurant Bonciani. Give my very warm regards to all our friends, to your wife and children. As for you, I hug you both tightly and affectionately.

Yours, P. Tchaikovsky

If you manage to sell any of my things, give the money to Nikolay Lvovich [4] so that he can pass it on to Shenshin [5], my creditor.

Notes and References

  1. Tchaikovsky's slip of the pen for 11 December [N.S.].
  2. At the Moscow Conservatory, whose staff Tchaikovsky had left for good in early/mid October 1878, rehearsals were going on for a student performance of the first four scenes of Yevgeny Onegin.
  3. During his stay in Florence Tchaikovsky worked on the orchestration of the last two movements of his Suite No. 1.
  4. Nikolay Lvovich Bochechkarov (d. 1879), an eccentric old man whom Tchaikovsky provided with financial support during his years in Moscow. After his decision to leave Moscow for good in early/mid October 1878 some of the furniture and belongings in Tchaikovsky's flat had to be disposed of, and it seems that Albrecht had offered to help with this. For more information on Bochechkarov's role in Tchaikovsky's life, see Tchaikovsky. The quest for the inner man (1991), and Пётр Чайковский. Биография, том I (2009).
  5. Dmitry Semyonovich Shenshin (1828-1897), retired major-general and Tchaikovsky's creditor in Moscow.
