Marseilles (Marseille) is the third-largest city in France, and is the administrative centre of the Bouches-du-Rhône department, and of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.


Tchaikovsky in Marseilles

Tchaikovsky visited Marseilles on two occasions:

11/23 May 1886 15/27 May 1886 At the end of a voyage down the Volga River and the Mediterranean Sea. He visited the Palais de Cristal and Palais Longchamps, and was impressed by the Rue Canebière. "Marseilles is a very attractive city" [1], he concluded.
4/16 April 1889 4/16 April 1889 After a concert engagement in London, Tchaikovsky boarded a steamship at Marseilles in order to visit his brother Anatoly in Tiflis.
