Pisa is a city and provincial capital in the Tuscany (Toscana) region of Italy.

During Tchaikovsky's lifetime it was part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, before becoming part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1860.

Tchaikovsky in Pisa

The composer visited Pisa with Modest Tchaikovsky and Nikolay Konradi from 7/19 to 9/21 February 1878.

On his first night, he attended a performance of Verdi's La forza del destino. The next day his tour of the city took in "the famous crooked tower, the cathedral and its attendant cemetery, very remarkable. All of this was very pleasing to me, particularly the peculiar tower. We climbed to the top of it, and admired the most splendid view" [1].
