San Remo (Sanremo) is a city and coastal resort in the province of Imperia and region of Liguria, in north-west Italy.

During Tchaikovsky's lifetime it was part of the Kingdom of Sardinia, before becoming part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861.

Tchaikovsky in San Remo

Tchaikovsky visited San Remo three times during the winter of 1877–78:

19/31 December 1877 26 December 1877/7 January 1878 Accompanied by Modest Tchaikovsky and Nikolay Konradi, he stayed at the Pension Joly, where he completed the orchestration of his Symphony No. 4 on 26 December/7 January.
31 December 1877/12 January 1878 22 January/3 February 1878 After a few days in Milan and Genoa, he returned to San Remo in order to work on the orchestration of the opera Yevgeny Onegin, which he completed on 20 January/1 February.
24 January/5 February 1878 7/19 February 1878 After spending two days in Nice, Tchaikovsky returned to San Remo to work on the vocal-piano reduction of Acts II and III of Yevgeny Onegin, which he completed on 28 January/9 February. The fair copy of the libretto was completed on 1/13 February, and after a visit to Monaco the next day, he spent some time touring the sights of San Remo, including the church of Santa Maria di Guardia.
