İzmir is the third-largest city in Turkey, and a provincial capital, situated on the Gulf of İzmir by the Aegean Sea.

During Tchaikovsky's lifetime the city was known as Smyrna, and it was the administrative centre of Aydin province.

Tchaikovsky in Smyrna

Tchaikovsky disembarked at Smyrna on 6/18 April 1889 at the end of a long steamship voyage from Marseilles, and stayed there overnight before continuing to Constantinople.
