Between 1878 and 1887 Tchaikovsky wrote four suites for orchestra, and in 1892 he compiled a concert suite from his ballet The Nutcracker.

In 1882 and 1890 he considered compiling concert suites from his ballets Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty respectively, which were later completed by others.

In 1889 or 1890 Tchaikovsky noted down a theme in D minor labelled "Andante (for suite)", which was not subsequently developed.
