Vilnius is the capital city and largest municipal district in Lithuania, in the county of Vilnius (Vilniaus apskritis).

During Tchaikovsky's lifetime it was known as Vilna (Вильна) or Vilno (Вильно) and was the capital of the Vilna district (Виленский уезд) and Vilna province (Виленская губерния) of the Russian Empire.

Tchaikovsky in Vilna

Tchaikovsky stopped briefly at Vilna on 15/27 February 1881, while travelling from Saint Petersburg to Vienna, in order to send a telegram to Nadezhda von Meck.
