В воздухе носились ароматы сирени и скошенного где-то сена. Майские жуки нарушали тишину своим басом, соловьи пели, издали доносилась песнь. Что за прелесть! Часов в 9 приехал мой Алексей, как раз в то время, когда я ужинал. Весь остальной вечер посвятил подробному рассмотрению имеющихся у Вас нот и музицированью. Между прочим, с большим интересом проиграл трио Направника. В последней части меня поразило учинённое им похищение чужой собственности. 			After writing a letter to you yesterday, I went for a stroll around the house. Oh, how fine and carefree it is here! The sun had already set, and on the vast meadow in front of the main entrance, the scorching heat of the day had given way to the cool of evening. The scent of lilacs and freshly mown hay hung in the air. The May beetles broke the silence with their bass voices, the nightingales sang, and a song could be heard in the far distance. What a delight! At 9 o'clock my [[Aleksey]] arrived, just as I was having supper. I spent the rest of the evening thoroughly looking through and playing your sheet music. Amongst other things, I played through [[Nápravník]]'s trio with great interest. In the last movement it struck me that he had appropriated someone else's property. The second theme is borrowed note-for-note from your humble servant:

			It is even in the same key! However, this circumstance does not at all detract from the interest of the whole work. Even geniuses ([[Mozart]] from [[Handel]], [[Beethoven]] from [[Mozart]]) have sometimes been known to appropriate themes by others. [[Nápravník]]'s trio is written with great talent, vividness and mastery. Before bed, I sat for a while by the open window, taking in the wonderful fresh air, listening to the multitude of spring night sounds; even the frantic croaking of frogs cannot detract from their delight. Today, having slept splendidly, I spent a long time wandering and strolling through the garden. The roses are starting to bloom, and the bushes are covered in a huge mass of buds. Then I played: never in my life have I had the opportunity to look through so many violin concertos as I did today. Amongst those I considered, I liked [[Anton Rubinstein]]'s concerto the most, particularly the first movement. I dined at the appointed time. What a lovely butler you have. He was not only exceptionally attentive, but also tactful and considerate. Yet this is not the sort of servile attentiveness and politeness that makes one feel awkward and embarrassed. On the contrary, his services seem to convey the feeling that he is a person devoted to you, who sincerely wishes to be a representative of your hospitality in your absence.

			In an hour or so I shall be going to the small forest near Tartaki.

			I have only just returned from the trip to the forest. They showed me the place where you usually drink tea, and where I shall certainly go again, next time with tea. From there I wandered around the whole forest. What a delight, what a pleasure this whole stroll was! How lovely this forest is, with its shady paths and dense vegetation! It must be marvellous in the evening, sitting in your spot, with a view of the river and the bank opposite, drinking tea and resting from the walk. I shall certainly do this. I forgot to tell you that this morning, whilst walking in the garden, I became curious and went through some gates, before clambering over a ditch, and was rewarded for it. A little square of woodland opened up before me, which, upon enquiry, turned out to be a place where there used to be buildings and a garden for the ''priests'', as the old watchman put it. I immediately went there and was thoroughly delighted with this place. Just a few steps from the house, this is shady and cosy — in short, it will be, besides the garden, the location for my daily morning walk. From there I also stopped to look at the monastery; the church is spacious and clean, but holds no particular interest. So as not to bother you with letters every day, I shall finish off this letter tomorrow. Thank you, my friend, for the host of wonderful, sweet sensations that I experience here every minute.

			I have just returned from a trip to the forest near the Vladimirsky manor. I wandered around it in all directions, going down to the river, directly opposite ''Skaly''. It is difficult to choose my favourite amongst the three places. Everywhere is lovely, but today I enjoyed it no less today than yesterday. Several times the thought occurred to me that no matter how good it is here in Sokolniki, it is still a pity that this is the best part of summer, i.e. ''May'', and you are not living here. By the time you arrive, the ''lilacs'', which are particularly fine here, will have finished blossoming. Still, by then the roses will be in bloom.

			This morning I began writing out the [[Souvenir d'un lieu cher\|violin pieces]], which I shall leave here with you.

			Since I last wrote to you, some rather significant events have occurred for me. The most important being that I have finished my [[The Enchantress\|opera]], and that consequently I am now enjoying the sensation of having a heavy burden lifted from me. I do not know why, but from the very first day that I began composing this opera, it seemed to me that I would not finish it, that I lacked the strength, that I was worn out, etc. But how pleasant it was to close the sketchbook in which I had been writing, and to think that all that now remains is to orchestrate the opera — and for me this is hardly work, but more of a pleasure. Having finished the opera, I immediately set about writing romances. I need to tell you that in the spring, the Grand Duke [[Konstantin Konstantinovich]] informed me that the [[Mariya Fyodorovna\|Empress]] would like me to dedicate ''one'' romance to her, and the Grand Duke strongly urged me to do this, and took it upon himself to act as intermediary. Having freed myself from writing the opera, I hastened to fulfil Her Majesty's wish, and now I have already written [[Twelve Romances, Op. 60\|10 romances]], which are being copied out and will soon be on their way to the Grand Duke.

			On 16th August, my brother [[Modest]] came to visit me with his pupil, and they stayed with me for two weeks. [Modest]] has been most diligent throughout the summer. He has written his own new comedy, and adapted for the stage a story by A. Potekhin, at the latter's request. I am exceptionally delighted with his own comedy, whose concept is most original and innovative. It depicts an energetic girl, who has arranged a completely independent life for herself, managing her estate with skill and success, living alone in the country, in proud isolation from the people. Initially, she is absorbed in her work and concerns for the welfare of the peasants. But once all this has become established and she settles into a routine, she begins to experience a yearning, and a need for love becomes apparent. But then it turns out that all her neighbours, and people of her class in general whom she meets are so petty, weak-willed and unmanly that she cannot fall in love with any of them. But then she discovers such a vast intellect, such courage, energy and determination in a simple, semi-literate man,, that she falls madly in love with him. This leads to a whole series of interesting complications. The gap which separates an educated person from an uneducated, albeit intelligent, commoner, prevents the mutual love of these young people from being crowned with a happy marriage; both come to realise this in their own way, and voluntarily part forever. This is all done in a most animated, interesting and touching manner, and I predict that this comedy will be widely talked about.

			They say that my opera ("''[[Cherevichki]]''") will be given on the [[Moscow]] stage in November, and I am being strongly urged to conduct the 1st performance myself. I should like to attempt this, but I am afraid for my nerves.

			My health seems to be in an excellent condition.

			I hope, my dear friend, that you are also feeling well. May the fine weather continue, and that you enjoy your stay in charming [[Pleshcheyevo]].

			I am gradually looking for somewhere new to live. My summer neighbours are very irritating, particularly with their music.

Мне грустно до слез, и хуже всего, что нужно скрывать это, дабы не было заметно моим милым сожителям. Конечно, через несколько дней привычка возьмёт своё, и слишком ещё живое воспоминание о Симаках побледнеет, — но мне грустно, грустно, грустно. Вы, может быть, спросите меня, друг мой, что заставляет меня добровольно лишать себя нескольких дней или недель наслаждения? 			Dear, good friend! I have spent the first hours after returning to [[Kamenka]] from [[Simaki]] miserably. I was pleased to see my family. I could not help but be touched by the joy my return brought them. But how sad I am, how hard it is for me to feel myself in a Jewish shtetl, to breathe the hot and noxious air, to be unable to swim, and to be deprived of everything that [[Simaki]] afforded me in such great abundance! I am miserable to the point of tears, and the worst thing is that I have to hide it so that my dear companions do not notice. Of course, in a few days I shall become accustomed to it, and the still all-too vivid memories of [[Simaki]] will fade — but I am so, so, so sad. You may ask, my friend, what compels me to voluntarily deprive myself of several days or weeks of pleasure? Well, firstly, [[Anatoly]] is expected here from hour to hour, and I cannot be the cause of the extreme grief that he would experienced if, upon arriving, he did not find me here. Secondly, you cannot imagine how eagerly I was awaited here and how much I was needed. My nieces have put on a show. Without me, they did not want to choose a play, or to do anything at all to organise it, and besides, I have become rather essential for their summer lives. Without me they do not go to the woods or play music — well, in short, they are bored, and so how they waited for me, how they urged me to return quickly.

			I endure this not only for myself, but for them as well. They are condemned to a permanent life in the wilderness, and fate happened to see to it that this wilderness would be so utterly devoid of any charm. I pity them!

			I must be patient and forget about [[Simaki]] for a little while, and then become accustomed to the miserable surroundings here once more, and find some means of seeking out nature and taking the opportunity to appreciate it, even in [[Kamenka]].

			The heat is unbearable. Everything is dry, one's breathing is constricted, and it is impossible to cool down, even at night. Despite this, we have been actively holding meetings regarding the plays for the proposed show. They have settled on the 3-act comedy "''A Tasty Morsel''", and have immediately begun writing out the roles and distributing them.

			I confess that I am very upset not to have had news from you in so long. I explain the absence of letters to myself by the fact that you wrote to me at [[Simaki]], that your letter has already been forwarded here, but it has not yet reached me.

As for the "Scottish Ballad", it is also represented amongst my favourite offspring, but unfortunately I am absolutely sure that no one will perform it in the way that I envisage. It must not be sung, but rather declaimed with the utmost fervour.

			I have been feeling very rotten recently: my head is heavy, I am not sleeping well at night, and I am having some incredibly strange dreams. I am looking forward to your reply to my question about the possibility of spending September at [[Simaki]]. God willing this may be possible!

			The grain harvest has already begun here. The crop is excellent, but the wheat is still lying all over the place because it was sown too thickly. She herself is ''not in the least improved'', even worse in physical terms, and mentally she is tormented by longing for her children left behind in [[Kamenka]]. Therefore, this journey, it seems, was for nothing! ''[[Tanya]]'' has not recovered either, and continues as before to suffer from headaches, and is pale and weak. [[Aleksey Tolstoy\|Tolstoy]] is an inexhaustible source of lyrics for music; he is one of the poets most sympathetic to me. Are you familiar with the [[Moscow]] poet ''[[Surikov]]'', who died this spring from consumption? He was a self-taught poet; his actual profession was sitting in a dilapidated iron shop, selling nails and horseshoes. Until the end of his life he remained ''sitting'', but he had a serious talent, and his pieces were imbued with genuine feeling. I want to use some of his verses for my future works.

I ask you to answer me by telegram (''Fastov line, [[Kamenka]], to Tchaikovsky'') the following question: can I come to [[Brailov\|Brailovo]] around 1st August instead 20th July? It so happens that one of my brothers, ''[[Ippolit]]'', is intending to go with his wife to [[Verbovka]] for a few days, just at the time when I wanted to go to [[Brailov\|Brailovo]]. Along the way he was hoping to see me, as we have not seen each other for ages. Because of his employment he cannot postpone the trip, and it would be awkward for me to leave here just as he arrives, and I should also like to combine the opportunity of meeting him with the opportunity to go to [[Brailov\|Brailovo]] later. However, I am not yet sure how this will work out. I should merely like to have your permission in advance to come on 1st August rather than on 20th July. It seems like summer is, finally, starting for us here. We have had a run of several lovely days, and particularly evenings. I thought of you and imagined you too enjoying a clear, windless evening, either in the Tartak woods or in the hills.

			We are preparing to put on a show here to take place on 16th July, the day before brother [[Anatoly]] leaves here. I am only taking part as prompter and director. We are giving [[Gogol]]'s "''The Marriage''" and a scene from Molière's "Misanthrope". The players are all youngsters, i.e. my nieces, a well as various nephews and nieces of my brother-in-law, who have come to visit their grandmother at [[Kamenka]] for the summer. During the rehearsals, my niece [[Tanya]], whose portrait I have already sent to you, revealed a serious talent for the stage. She plays the role of ''Сelimène'' superbly. The whole show is generally very sweet, but there is one snag! We have absolutely no public audience, i.e. those attending will be made up of various Kamenkan Davydovs who have already seen the rehearsals. This dampens the overall enthusiasm somewhat. It was decided to invite peasants as spectators. This was entirely possible, since the performance would take place on the balcony, and the audience seated in the courtyard. I have portraits of all my other nieces and nephews ready to send to you — but I have decided to postpone sending them until [[Moscow]], because I am afraid that the post will deliver them to [[Brailov]] just shortly after your departure.

			Meanwhile, the rather tedious work of copying out is slowly progressing. Three opuses (or rather four, including the [[Brailov]] [[Souvenir d'un lieu cher\|violin pieces]]) are now ready. Next I shall set about the collection of [[Children's Album\|pieces for children]], copy out the ''[[Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom\|Mass]]'', and then I shall rest (as you advise), and will gradually come up with something new and substantial. For some reason I have cooled towards "''[[Undina (projected opera)\|Undina]]''". I want to find a more deeply engaging subject for an opera. What would you say to [[Shakespeare]]'s "''[[Romeo and Juliet]]''"? It is true that it has already served as an operatic and symphonic canvas on many occasions — but the richness of this tragedy is inexhaustible, and once when re-reading it I became carried away by the idea of an opera in which the development of the action would be preserved as in [[Shakespeare]], without any of the deviations and additions made by ''[[Berlioz]] and [[Gounod]]''.

			My health is splendid; I have not felt this well in ages. But as before, there are moments where I still have an irresistible urge to go ''somewhere'', far away from everyone and everything. It would be very beneficial for me to retreat to [[Brailov]] for a while. I think of [[Moscow]] with longing, fear and a heavy heart. 			I have become spoiled by receiving such frequent letters from you. A week and a half has now elapsed since I received your last letter, and now I am starting to worry: are you well, is everything fine? At the same time, I understand that it is not easy for you to find a convenient moment for written correspondence. Here is what I want to propose to you, my friend. In order to prevent any misunderstandings between us in the even of not receiving an expected letter, let us agree that I shall write you at least one letter a week, and you at least one every 2 weeks. I am taking it upon myself to write the greater portion because I tend to write little, but often, while you tend to write rarely, but at length. Do you agree with this?

			I often have the unpleasant thought that [[Brailov\|Brailovo]] will not leave you with particularly agreeable memories. The weather is probably no less unfavourable for you as it is for us here. Not a day goes by without thunderstorms and rain, the nights are very cold, and the days grey and windy. I imagine you seldom venture into the woods. That is a pity.

			All would be well for us here in [[Verbovka]], were it not for the fact that there is constant illness. My sister has fully recovered, but the children are falling ill one after another. One of my little nephews alarmed us all: he started with an intestinal infection, which, fortunately, was prevented in time. My brother [[Anatoly]] had an eye infection — he is also better now. My niece [[Vera]] (the one who was injured in [[Kiev]]) has an abscess in her ear, and she, poor thing, has not slept for several nights.

			My health is as good as could I could wish for, apart from one new and very odd phenomenon that has been repeating itself every evening for some time now. Around 9 o'clock I am seized by some sort of unbearable drowsiness, accompanied by a complete collapse of all my strength, as a result of which I am unable to speak or listen to others. I have the urge to run away somewhere, to hide, vanish, ''to not be''. At the same time, I already know from experience that I must overcome this drowsiness, if I do not want to suffer the whole night from a sinking heart, nightmares and tormenting dreams. This struggle lasts the whole evening. But, of course, this is nothing more than a manifestation of nerves, to which one ought not to pay the slightest attention. What protects me from this condition is, firstly, effort of will, and secondly, a glass of wine.

			My work is progressing quite slowly, and not as successfully as I should like. However, the sonata has been ready for some time, and today I began copying out a few romances — some written abroad, some at [[Kamenka]] in April. One of the romances I wrote out today is based on a text by ''[[Lermontov]]'': "''[[Six Romances, Op. 38\|Love of a Dead Man]]''". I wrote this because in one of your letters you cited this poem to me as confirmation of one of your opinions regarding the relationship of poetry to music. That was in February in [[Florence]]. For this reason I find myself recalling memories of a most pleasant fortnight spent in [[Florence]].

			Are you going to [[Paris]]? I received news from ''[[Jurgenson]]'' that 4 concerts of Russian music are to take place in [[Paris]] in August, under the direction of [[Nikolay Rubinstein\|N. G. Rubinstein]]. Please take this into consideration, my friend. The following of my works will be performed: the ''[[Piano Concerto No. 1\|Piano Concerto]], "[[The Tempest]]", "[[Francesca]]", and two movements from [[Symphony No. 4\|our symphony]]''. I shall inform you of the precise dates of these concerts in due course, in the event that you want to arrange your journey to [[Paris]] to coincide with them. Regardless, spring is finally making it presence felt, and despite the cold, the trees are beginning to blossom. Looking at [[Nikolay Konradi\|Kolya]], I am glad he is with us. I have just been reading in the newspapers that numerous diseases are rife in [[Petersburg]], to the point where they say that doctors are forbidding children from going outside, and yet he needs fresh air more than anything else. I like to think that the reports of epidemic diseases are very much exaggerated. You will not believe, my friend, the extent to which all the foreign press has unanimously rounded on Russia now. With what glee they now inform their readers of the various disasters that have befallen her; the nihilist revolt, the dangerous illnesses of the Emperor and Gorchakov, the diseases which are supposedly killing thousands in both capitals. And all of this to somehow vent their impotent rage. But the English have gone beyond all the bounds of shamelessness. A people who systematically poison, debauch and ruin hundreds of millions of people in India, accuse us of cruelty, call us barbarians, because at the cost of incredible sacrifices we liberated the Turkish Slavs from oppression? I highly recommend this author to you, and am confident that you will be pleased. I want to make a confession to you. I am profoundly saddened, offended and surprised by the incomprehensible silence from all my [[Moscow]] friends regarding the [[Symphony No. 4\|symphony]]. Until now I only had information about it from you and also indirectly from [[Kotek]], who tod me that his friend Porubinovsky, a student at the Conservatory, liked it very much. I anticipated that this symphony would, if not touch or astound my musical friends, then, at the very least, interest them. I expected that they would understand how impatiently and rapaciously I was awaiting sympathetic appraisals from them, that each of them would describe their impressions to me in detail, and not merely after due consideration, but fresh, first impressions, as you did, my dear friend. I very much needed this. And just imagine! Not a single word, except for a telegram in which it was said that the symphony was ''performed'' superbly, an assurance which, as I see from your last letter, was inaccurate. How can I not be offended and upset! Let us suppose that I am entirely satisfied with your glowing review and that I can do without their admiration. But it is not their admiration that I need, but rather their friendly attention. Were it not for your letters, I would have been completely ignorant so far as the symphony is concerned. And is it not strange that, out of the whole Conservatory, only the voice of student bassoonist Porubinovsky has reached me, and even then indirectly. But then it is difficult to describe to you how overjoyed I was by this; at least one person from the institution where I have worked for 12 years has reacted, and very warmly. All of this has given me much to ponder. And once again, you appear as my consolation. Without your friendship, which repays me a hundredfold for the inattention of my colleagues, I would be utterly distressed, I would have fallen into despair. You understand me, my ardently beloved friend! You understand that, having written a large composition into which I have put my whole soul, and knowing in advance that amongst the mass of people listening to this work there will be few who will even half appreciate it, my sole consolation is the thought that my friends will understand, encourage and appreciate it. And suddenly there is neither a word, nor a greeting from them. This is hurtful and incredibly offensive!

На Lungarno и в Cascino, где я гулял сегодня перед обедом, была просто давка и множество богатых экипажей с расфранчёнными дамами и изящными господами. 			Today is the last day but one of the carnival. The streets are exceptionally lively, but a long way from the accounts of what happens in [[Rome]] nowadays. Groups of men with costumes, but without masks, walk along the pavements and sing songs in choirs. On the Lungarno and in the Cascino, where I walked today before dinner, it was simply packed with a multitude of rich carriages with well-dressed ladies and elegant gentlemen. After dinner I set off for one of the numerous local theatres, where a new opera, "''I falsi monateri''", by some unknown maestro was to be given. The theatre is called the ''Arena Naziоnale''. It was, apparently, converted from an enormous circus. The seats are incredibly cheap. I paid 70 centimes for admission, and 50 for a ''posto distinto'', i.e. for one of the best seats. The accommodation was huge — there were countless people, the men were smoking, the singers barely audible, the music was astonishingly vulgar and talentless, and it was hot and stuffy. I barely managed to sit through one act, and found it far more pleasant to walk in the fresh air. The nights are delightful: warm, the sky littered with stars. How good Italy is! Now, having done enough walking, I came home and felt the desire to talk with you, my dear and incomparable friend. The window is open; I am relishing the night air after a warm spring day. How strange and peculiar, yet sweet, it is to think of my distant, inexpressibly beloved homeland! There it is still winter. You are sitting in your office, beside a blazing hearth, perhaps. Muscovites wrapped in fur coats are passing by your house, in the midst of a silence unbroken even by the noise of carriages, thanks to the sledge ways. How infinitely far we are from one another. You are in the midst of winter — and I am in a land where the trees are already green, and where I am writing this letter by an open window at 11 o'clock in the evening! And yet, I think about this winter not with revulsion, but with affection. I love our long, stubborn winter. You cannot wait for Lent to arrive, and with it the first signs of spring. But how magical our spring is, with its suddenness, it's magnificent strength! How I love it when streams of thawing snow flow down the streets, and the air is filled with a sense of something lively and invigorating! How lovely it is to welcome the first green grass! How you rejoice at the appearance of rooks, followed by the larks and other foreign summer guests! Here, spring approaches with such quiet steps, little by little, that it is impossible to identify when exactly it sets in. And how can I be moved by the sight of green grass, when I already had it before my eyes in December and January?

			But even if there is nothing particularly moving about it, one cannot help but take great pleasure in the quantity and splendour of Italian nature and the Italian climate. God forbid I should live in this wonderful country for good, but it is very pleasant to visit, particularly now, where the gently creeping spring has already brought flowers and warmth with it. I consider that you need to spend 3 or 4 winter months in Italy next year. As far as I know, you suffer from the cold, and find the harshness of the Russian winter difficult to bear. Then how could you not settle in Italy? It is simply essential for your health. There are people like me, for whom a cold climate is pure bliss — that is my constitution, and I am perfectly suited to living in Russia in the winter. Others, like you, cannot tolerate the cold, and only fully thrive in a warm climate; and provided your affairs and family circumstances do not prevent you from leaving [[Moscow]], then you certainly ought to do so. I would be saddened if you went abroad for a long while; it gladdens me to think that you are living in my city, but for the sake of your physical well-being, which has such a great bearing on your frame of mind, I would very, very much wish for you to spend part of the winter, the most severe part, in Italy. I feel sorry for you, my dear [[Nadezhda Filaretovna]]! Clearly, the life you lead in [[Moscow]] cannot be a happy one if the cold compels you to stay at home. Meanwhile, despite your excellent material circumstances, you are ''obliged'' to live a life that is not as you would wish. It is sad to think that even great wealth does not afford you complete freedom. How glad I shall be to receive a letter from you next January from [[Naples]], from which I shall learn that you are enjoying life to the fullest, insofar as this is ''fully'' possible!

			Do you remember that I wrote to you from [[Florence]] about a boy whom I heard in the street in the evening, and who moved me so much with his wonderful voice? The day before yesterday, to my inexpressible joy, I found this boy again: he sang ''Perché tradir mi, perché lasciar mi'' for me again, and I was simply swooning with delight. I cannot remember a simple folksong ever having such an effect on me. On this occasion he introduced me to a new local song, so charming that I intend to find him again and have him sing it a few times so that I can note down both the words and the music. It is approximately as follows (I do not know what the Pimpinella is that is being sung about, but I shall certainly find out):

			I feel so sorry for this child! He is obviously being exploited by his fathers, uncles and assorted relatives. Now, for the carnival, he is singing from morning until night, and will continue to do so until his voice is lost forever. Even now, compared to the first time, his voice is slightly cracked. This cracking lends a new charm to his phenomenally attractive voice — but it will not last long. Had he been born into a wealthy family, he may perhaps have gone on to become a renowned artist (singer). In general, it is necessary to live in Italy for a while to recognise its undisputed primacy in the art of the voice. At every step here on the street you hear excellent voices, and at this very moment I can hear a very beautiful voice in the distance, singing some song at the top of its lungs in a high, chesty tenor. Every Italian is by nature a good singer, even if they do not have a particularly beautiful voice. They have a veritable ''émission de voix'' and the ability to sing with their whole chest, not with their throat nor through their nose, as we do.

			We are spending our last days here. On Thursday 7 March/24 February we are going to ''[[Clarens]]'', and in all likelihood, directly without even stopping at ''Como''. Travelling with four people is not so convenient with frequent stops. [[Modest]] is tormented by pangs of conscience; he is so taken with museums, churches and all manner of other sights that ''[[Nikolay Konradi\|Kolya]]'' has done little studying. And I have had enough of wandering around the commotion and splendour of [[Florence]]. Just imagine that I still have not received a single appraisal of my symphony from my friends in [[Moscow]]! This is very odd.

	Я кончил Шопенгауера. Не знаю, какое впечатление произвела бы на меня эта философия, если б я познакомился с ней в другом месте и в других обстоятельствах. Здесь она показалась мне остроумным парадоксом. Мне кажется, что всего несостоятельнее Шопенгауер в своих окончательных выводах. Пока он доказывает, что лучше не ''жить'', чем ''жить'', все ждёшь и спрашиваешь себя: положим, что он прав, — но что же мне делать? Вот в ответе на этот вопрос он и оказался слаб. В сущности, его теория ведёт весьма логически к самоубийству. Но, испугавшись такого опасного средства отделаться от тягости жизни и не посмев рекомендовать самоубийство как универсальное средство приложить его философию к практике, он пускается в очень курьёзные софизмы, силясь доказать, что самоубийца, лишая себя жизни, не отрицает, а подтверждает любовь к жизни! Это и непоследовательно и неостроумно. Что касается ''Nirwana'', то это такая бессмыслица, о которой и говорить не стоит. Как бы то ни было, а книгу о Шопенгауере я прочёл с величайшим интересом, и многое в ней показалось мне необычайно остроумным. Его теория ''любви'' необычайно оригинальна и нова, хотя некоторые подробности в фактических доказательствах извращены и натянуты. Вы совершенно правы, говоря, что нельзя доверять искренности философа, учащего нас не признавать никаких радостей жизни и умерщвлять плоть до последней крайности, который сам без всякого стеснения до последнего дня жизни пользовался всеми благами её и очень хорошо устраивал свои делишки. 			I have a big favour to ask of you, my dear friend! I want to write a few romances — but it is impossible to obtain texts here. Would you be so good in your free moments to scour the works of [[Fet]], [[Aleksey Tolstoy\|A. Tolstoy]], [[Mey]] and [[Tyutchev]] for verses which you consider suitable for music? I should be inexpressibly grateful to you. I am somewhat embarrassed that performing this task is associated with the effort of correspondence, but in view of my keen desire for the verses to be chosen by you, I decided to trouble you.

			What a dear city [[Florence]] is! The longer one stays here, the more one loves it. This is not a noisy capital, where one's eyes are darting everywhere and the commotion is wearying; while at the same time, there are so many things full of artistic and historical interest that there is no possibility of becoming bored. We inspect the city's sights at our leisure, without dashing from one museum to another, or between churches and galleries. Each morning we set off to see something, and by 11 o'clock we are back at home. From 11 until 1, I work, i.e. write little pieces for piano or romances. After lunch we go to the Uffizi, the Pitti or the Accademia, from where we walk to the Cascino, which becomes more delightful every day, due to the gradual onset of spring. After dinner I set off to wander along the main streets, full of life and activity. The remainder of the evening I spend reading or writing letters. There is no music here at all. Both of the opera houses are closed, which is a great loss for me. Sometimes I am so eager to hear music that I would be overjoyed to listen to any "Trovatore" or "Traviata"... But even these are nowhere to be heard.

			Of all the things I've seen, perhaps the one which made the greatest impression on me was the Medici Chapel in ''San Lorenzo''. It is incredibly beautiful and grandiose. Only there did I begin to understand the full magnitude of Michaelangelo's genius. I began to find in him some vague kinship with [[Beethoven]]. The same breadth and strength, the same boldness, sometimes bordering on ugliness, the same gloominess of mood. However, perhaps this is not at all a novel idea. I read a very witty comparison between Raphael and [[Mozart]] in ''Tain''. I do not know whether Michaelangelo has ever been compared with [[Beethoven]]?

			I have finished Schopenhauer. I do not know what impression his philosophy might have made on me had I encountered it elsewhere and in different circumstances. Here, it seemed to me to be an amusing paradox. It seems to me that Schopenhauer is at his most untenable in his final conclusions. While he demonstrates that is better ''not to live'' than ''to live'', one pauses to ask oneself: supposing he is right — but what am I to do? In answering this question he was at his weakest. In essence, his theory quite logically leads to suicide. But, alarmed by such a dangerous means of ridding oneself of the burden of life, and not venturing to recommend suicide as a universal means of applying his philosophy in practice, he resorts to very curious sophistries, attempting to show that suicide, in depriving oneself of life, does not deny, but rather affirms a love for live! This is both contradictory and bleak. As regards ''Nirwana'' — that is nonsense, unworthy of discussion. Be that as it may, I read the book about Schopenhauer with the utmost interest, and I found much of it to be exceptionally entertaining. His theory of ''love'' is extraordinarily original and novel, although a few details in the factual evidence have been twisted and strained. You are absolutely right to say that one cannot trust the sincerity of a philosopher who exhorts us not to recognise any of life's joys, and to mortify the flesh to the ultimate extreme, while he himself brazenly enjoyed all its benefits until the end of his life, and arranged his affairs splendidly.

			I received your telegram yesterday morning, my dear friend. It afforded me indescribable pleasure. I had been very worried, firstly that your health might prevent you from attending the concert, and secondly, as to whether or not the symphony would be to your liking. It may very well be that even if it did not particularly please you, out of kindness and friendly concern you would still send me some sort of salutation; but from the tone and wording of the telegram, I clearly see that you were pleased with what had been written for you. In the depths of my soul I still retain the conviction that this is the best thing I have written. It still seems odd to me that I have received no reviews of the symphony from any of my [[Moscow]] friends. Meanwhile, the score was dispatched more than a month and a half ago. Along with your telegram, I received a telegram signed by [[Nikolay Rubinstein\|Rubinstein]] and all the others. But this merely says that the symphony was splendidly performed. Not a word regarding its merits. However, perhaps this ought to have been implicit. Thank you for the news about the success of my beloved offspring, and for the warm words of your telegram. I was mentally present at the concert; I worked out to the minute when the opening phrase was to be heard, and then every detail thereafter, attempting to imagine what impression this music should produce. The first movement (the most difficult, but also the best) would probably have seemed to many on first hearing to be long and not entirely comprehensible. The remaining movements are easier.

			I am continuing to feel very well in [[Florence]], and find the city appealing in every respect. Although spring has not altogether set in, it is quickly drawing near. The streets are filled with flowers; they even have my favourites, lilies of the valley, which are very inexpensive. The mere sight of these lovely flowers, adorning my table at this very minute, is sufficient to instull a love for life. Today, on the occasion of the holiday, we went out of town to a place called ''Bello Sguardo'', which affords a wonderful view of the whole of [[Florence]] and its surroundings. From there we set off for the monastery of ''Certosa'' (''Chartreux''). My God, how delightful this is! Firstly, the monastery's location is delightful, with marvellous views of the valley in which it is situated, as well as the city. Secondly, it contains a whole mass of old monuments, and ancient tombs in particular. The main church is astoundingly beautiful and elegant. For some reason the monastery has not yet been secularised, and so there are numerous interesting assortments of monks. The garden was luxurious, and I could not help but envy one old monk who, with a book in hand, walked quietly along a shaded avenue, enjoying the absolute peace and the knowledge that he was far removed from the noise and commotion of the city. Returning home, we watched through the window of our apartment as a grand procession followed the coffin of Prince Strozzi, a senator who died a few days ago, and who was buried today with great pomp.

			The day before yesterday, after I had already sent you my letter, I was suddenly and unexpectedly overcome by a fit of melancholy so intense that I could not shake it off all day. After observing and listening to myself, I soon ascertained the cause. My conscience had begun to torment and reproach me for my idleness. No matter how hard I tried to console myself with the thought that, having just completed two large works, I was entitled to rest and be idle — my conscience continued to sting me. Finally, I realised that I simply needed to start working. But on what? For a large work I would require solitude, and consequently this would have to wait until the autumn. But there is nothing to stop me from writing a whole series of small things, and I made up my mind to write one little thing each morning. Yesterday I wrote a romance, and today a little piano piece, and my cheerful mood immediately returned.

			I have come to the conclusion that it is not worth going to [[Naples]]. Firstly, it is too far, and secondly, to lead a tourist's life (as otherwise there is no pleasure in spending a month in [[Naples]]) is inconvenient when you have a child on your hands, particularly one who is deaf and mute. Besides, I do not want to distract my brother from working on his story. There will be no time for work in [[Naples]], and I want to take advantage of the time we still have together to make him write. And so, we shall remain in [[Florence]] for the time being, before travelling to ''Como'', then to Switzerland, and then I have dreams of going to Russia in April.

			I still have not finished Schopenhauer, and will defer my report on my general impression of his philosophy until a future letter. I have been twice with my brother to the ''Uffizi'' and to the ''Palazzo Pitti''. Thanks to [[Modest]], I have experienced many artistic impressions. He is simply floating in an ocean of bliss from the chef-d'oeuvres of Raphael, Leonardi da Vinci, etc. We have also been to the gallery of paintings by the new school, where we came across some excellent things. If I am not mistaken, Italy is now affected by a spirit of realism in painting. All the paintings by contemporary artists that I have seen here are distinguished more by the astonishing accuracy of details than by the depth and poetry of the overall concept. The figures are lifelike, but the concept very simple: as if an attendant were drawing back a curtain, and both the attendant and the curtain itself are so real that you are just waiting for them to move; a Pompeian woman sprawled in an antique armchair, laughing with such Homeric laughter that one has the urge to laugh too — none of this makes any pretensions to profound ideas, but both the drawing and the colouring are astonishingly true to life! (For God's sake, forgive the sloppiness and mess on this page; I dropped my pen, made three blots, and then, wanting to dry them over the lamp, set fire to the paper.) As for music in Italy, it is in a bad way. A city like [[Florence]] does not have a single opera house, or rather they exist, but nothing goes on there, because there are no impresarios.

			I shall not send you any new address for the time being, my dear [[Nadezhda Filaretovna]], because nothing has yet been decided, and I do not know how long I shall be staying here. As soon as I reach some definitive conclusion, I shall telegraph you in order to be assured of your letters. It would be very hard for me to be without letters from you for a while.

			I am cheerful, calm and happy, and I revel in the thought that I owe it to a friend such as you, my dear [[Nadezhda Filaretovna]]. May you be as healthy, calm and contented as possible.
