	Dear friend! I write to you with a heavy heart, with a longing and sadness in my soul. The reason is as follows. A mortal ghost from the recent past has unexpectedly risen up before me again. A ''certain person'' has again reminded me of herself. I received a letter from [[Anatoly]] today. Some mysterious gentleman came to him, calling himself a relative of the certain person. He told my brother that the ''certain person'' had approached a lawyer, and now wished to demand a divorce. He, although not endowed with a power of attorney, approached my brother to say that, having been convinced of my ''honesty'' from reading my letters, he wished to conclude the matter peacefully and wished to learn my terms. After a brief reflection, I wrote the following to [[Anatoly]]. 1) To discuss these matter with a person not endowed with a power of attorney is futile, especially when this person, as [[Anatoly]] writes, bows down to the virtues and intelligence of the certain person; 2) I consent to a divorce at any moment, but I can only negotiate this with a person who has received her formal power of attorney; 3) I will not pay any money, in accordance with what was said to her in the summer, i.e. she was offered a divorce and 10 thousand, and when she refused, it was said that if she subsequently initiated the matter herself, the money would no longer be at my disposal; 4) The matter will not begin when she wants it, but when I return to Russia, and in no way can I make my return dependent upon her whims; 5) I am ready to bear the costs of proceedings. 			The point is that I ought to be grateful that the certain person has finally come to her senses. But there is no way whatsoever to look ahead and know how serious this is, or whether she will come up with some new ruse? Besides which, it is simply intolerable for me to ''remember'' again! From time to time I forget this whole story, and then, when the ghost unexpectedly rears up again, it is initially very difficult for me.

			I have decided to go to ''[[Clarens]]'' on Saturday. Although these days I lead a life rich in amusements, to me a life without things to do is ultimately always tiresome, and I should have left forthwith, had I not wanted to wait for the manuscript to be sent on from [[Florence]], and from letters I see that it ought to be there. I have been to the theatre three times, but have yet to hear any music. Today I am going to a musical festival, where there will be performances of works by [[Delibes]], [[Massenet]] and Joncière.

			Oh! How I miss the Viale dei Colli and my quiet corner at this moment! Until we meet, my good and dear friend!

Право, можно с ума сойти от этого сумбура! То она решительно отказывается от всяких разговоров о разводе, то начинает дело и хочет ''заставить'' меня согласиться на то, что составляет самое живейшее моё желание. После краткого обдумания я написал Анатолию следующее. 1) Разговаривать об этом деле с лицом, не облеченным доверенностью, нечего, особенно когда это лицо, как пишет Анатолий, преклоняется перед добродетелями и умом известной особы. 2) На развод я согласен во всякую минуту, но переговоры об этом могу вести только с человеком, получившим её формальную доверенность; 3) Денег никаких не дам, согласно с тем, что ей было сказано летом, т. е. ей был предложен развод и 10 тысяч, а когда она отказалась, было сказано, что, в случае когда она впоследствии сама начнёт дело, — денег уже в моем распоряжении не будет; 4) Дело можно будет начать не тогда, когда она этого захочет, а когда я вернусь в Россию, возвращение же своё я никоим образом не могу ставить в зависимость от её капризов; 5) Расходы на ведение дела готов принять на себя.

В сущности, следует радоваться, что известная особа наконец одумалась. Но нет никакой возможности предвидеть и знать, насколько это серьёзно, не выкинет ли она какой-нибудь новой штуки? А кроме того, мне просто невыносимо тяжело опять ''вспомнить''! От времени до времени я забываю всю эту историю, и потом, когда призрак неожиданно опять восстанет, — мне в первое время очень тяжко.

В субботу я решился ехать в ''Сlarens''. Хотя все эти дни я веду жизнь, богатую развлечениями, — но мне жизнь без дела, в конце концов, всегда утомительна, и я бы уехал тотчас же, если б не хотелось подождать ещё присылки рукописи из Флоренции, а по письмам вижу, что она должна быть там. Был три раза в театре, но музыки ещё никакой не слышал. Сегодня иду в музыкальный фестиваль, где будут исполняться сочинения {{sic|Deslibes|Delibes}}, Massenet и Joncière.

О! как я жалею в эту минуту Viale dei Colli и свой тихий уголок! До свиданья, милый и добрый друг мой!
