от радости. С другой стороны, я не могу не радоваться, что приехал сюда, ибо знаю, что заниматься будет в высшей степени удобно.

Грустное настроение пройдёт, вероятно, завтра же, и я так же буду завтра наслаждаться тишиной и покоем, как наслаждался ими на Viale ''dei Colli''! О воспоминания, — сколько в них и сладости, и в то же время горечи!

Однако я, кажется, сейчас заговорю стихами. Кстати о стихах. Как я ни горжусь «''Ландышами''», а всё-таки не нахожу их годными для печати и потому отказываюсь от твоего предложения напечатать их. Да притом ты ошибаешься, Модя, полагая, что и «В[естник] Е[вропы]» и «Р[усский] в[естник]» готовы препираться из-за чести напечатать мой вздор. Градации в художественных явлениях бесконечны. Моё стихотворение ''превосходно'' по отношению ко мне, т. е. к человеку не специалисту. Но что оно в сравнении, напр[имер], с стихами Апухтина? Нет. Распространяй мою стихотворческую славу, труби и греми, — но тиснению не предавай.

Напиши подробно о своей повести. Что делают твои герои и героини? Ради Бога, не падай духом и пиши.

А я к Коле так и не собрался написать. Поцелуй его от мена в глазки, нос, шейку — повсюду.
