For two days in a row I&#039;ve felt the strongest artistic pleasure. On Sunday I heard Berlioz&#039;s &quot;&#039;&#039;Faust&#039;&#039;&quot;, and yesterday I saw three plays at the Comédie Française: 1) &quot;Le marriage forcé&quot;, 2) &quot;Le petit Hôtel&quot; <del style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">и </del>3) &quot;Le gendre de Monsieur Poirier&quot;. The second of these is a new play written by Meilhac and Halévy. That&#039;s sufficient recommendation in itself. What a delightful play, and how well it was performed. &#039;&#039;Thiron&#039;&#039; (who, remember, plays the cook in &#039;&#039;Gendre&#039;&#039;) is such a wonderful actor, and what a delight Coquelin is, and &#039;&#039;Samary&#039;&#039;! The latest new &#039;&#039;sociétaire&#039;&#039; is a lovely actress. As for &#039;&#039;Gendre&#039;&#039;, it was performed by the same actors. I&#039;ll say the following about &#039;&#039;Got&#039;&#039;. I saw him here in &quot;&#039;&#039;Fourchambault&#039;&#039;&quot; at Christmas. He plays the son there. And I didn&#039;t like this play, and the role of &#039;&#039;Got&#039;&#039; in particular. Looking at him then, I decided that I probably still didn&#039;t know if there were two &#039;&#039;Gots&#039;&#039; at the Comédie Française. The one who played in &#039;&#039;Fourchambaults&#039;&#039; had nothing in common with the one who played in &#039;&#039;Poirier&#039;&#039;. Since then I&#039;ve been trying to find his picture in the stores to be sure that the same person cannot appear in such vastly different roles, to go from a funny, long-nosed and old face, to a young and handsome face as required. Yesterday, peering intently through binoculars, I was convinced that it was him. And you know what — I think this is simply an &#039;&#039;ingenious&#039;&#039; actor, because both roles are essentially &#039;&#039;incarnations&#039;&#039;, rebirths. You can&#039;t imagine how divinely they are played! I was afraid that the 2nd time the performance of the play wouldn&#039;t seem so astonishing to me. Far from it! I enjoyed it no less than the first time. &#039;&#039;Croizette&#039;&#039; alone doesn&#039;t quite satisfy me. She is one of those actresses who (like <del style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">Mevdvedeva </del>in Moscow)<del style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">, </del>&#039;&#039;represent&#039;&#039; rather than &#039;&#039;portray&#039;&#039;. When something powerful and outstanding needs to be said, she is good, but while she is silent or says something ordinary, it is as if you hear: &quot;&#039;&#039;really this is all pretence, don&#039;t you believe it, I&#039;m not a marquise at all, but simply Croizette&#039;&#039;&quot;. Furthermore, having put on a lot of weight, she suddenly became so similar in appearance to Alyosha Davydov, and in manner to Vera Butakova, that the illusion was shattered for me. She even fluttered her eyelashes like Alyosha. Well, that&#039;s enough theatre chronicling. Now I&#039;m tired. Farewell, my dear Modya. For two days in a row I&#039;ve felt the strongest artistic pleasure. On Sunday I heard Berlioz&#039;s &quot;&#039;&#039;Faust&#039;&#039;&quot;, and yesterday I saw three plays at the Comédie Française: 1) &quot;Le marriage forcé&quot;, 2) &quot;Le petit Hôtel&quot; и 3) &quot;Le gendre de Monsieur Poirier&quot;. She is one of those actresses who (like Mevdvedeva in Moscow), &#039;&#039;represent&#039;&#039; rather than &#039;&#039;portray&#039;&#039;. I kiss you and Kolya. </ins></div></td></tr>

<br />
