	Having come to [[Paris]] for just one day, this happened to be precisely the one where you were kind enough to let the public hear my "''[[Tempest]]''". I went to the Châtelet; I listened to it and I am hastening, Monsieur, to thank you sincerely and enthusiastically for the flattering attention you have shown for my music, and for the magnificent interpretation of my difficult and ungrateful work. From the bottom of my heart I also thank the musicians of your excellent orchestra for their efforts and for the trouble they took to bring out all the details of the score in the most artistic manner. If a certain prejudice against Muscovite barbarism has something to do with it, the defects inherent in the work itself have a lot more to do with it: its form is diffuse, long and unbalanced. In any case, the execution, which was, as I have already said, excellent, has nothing to do with it. Le hasard a voulu qu'étant venu à Paris pour un seul jour, ce fût justement celui ou vous avez bien voulu faire entendre ma «''Tempête''» au public. J'ai été au Châtelet; je l'ai entendue et je m'empresse monsieur, de vous remercier sincèrement, vivement, et pour l'attention flatteuse que vous avez témoignée pour ma musique et pour l'interprétation magnifique de mon œuvre difficile et ingrate. Je remercie aussi du fond du cœur les musiciens de vôtre excellent orchestre des efforts qu'ils ont faits, de la peine qu'ils se sont donnée pour faire ressortir de la manière la plus artistique tous les détails de cette partition.

Quant aux applaudissements piteux et maigres, entremêlés de sifflets assez énergiques, dont la pauvre «''Tempête''» a été saluée, j'en ai été sensiblement affecté, mais non étonné. — J'en étais sûr. — Si une certaine prévention contre le barbarisme moscovite y est pour quelque chose, les défauts inhérents à l'œuvre même y sont pour beaucoup: la forme en est diffuse, longue et manquant d'équilibre. Dans tous les cas, l'exécution, qui a été, comme je l'ai déjà dit, excellente, n'y est pour rien.

Je serai certainement venu vous serrer la main et vous exprimer de vive voix ma reconnaissance, si l'état actuel de ma santé ne m'empêchait de remplir ce devoir. Je ne suis à Paris qu'en passant et uniquement pour consulter un médecin. Me voila donc obligé, monsieur, d'avoir recours à la plume pour vous témoigner ma reconnaissance. Soyez certain qu'elle ne s'effacera jamais de mon cœur.
