Гулянья пешком сделались для меня теперь тягостны по причине появления в совершенно непонятном и небывалом количестве особого рода мошек. Эта дрянь залезает в уши, внос, в глаза, в рот, в волосы; целая туча их идёт вместе со мною во время прогулки, и нет никакой возможности от них отделаться. Куренье немного помогает, — но нельзя же вечно курить. Лева утешает, что это ненадолго и что скоро они должны подохнуть. Наталья Андр[еевна] занимается в настоящее время воспитанием для меня воробушка. До чего был противен этот птенец в первое время! Теперь он начинает покрываться пёрышками и быть похожим на птичку. Она обещает сделать его совсем ручным.

Сегодня первое действие оперы будет у меня совсем готово, и я тотчас же примусь за второе. Если пойдёт все так же хорошо, то к осени опера может быть совсем готова. Это было бы очень приятно. {{...}}

Катя (Кат[ерина] Фёдор[овна]) выходит замуж за Городецкого — смотрителя кирпичного завода. Свадьба состоится в августе.

С бураками случилось то, что бывает каждое лето. В какое отчаянье приходил Лева! Казалось, что все погибло. А в конце концов бураки оказываются великолепными. В Вербовке они, говорят, ещё лучше. Сегодня мы все едем в Вербовку. Получил длинное письмо от Модеста. Он не скучает. Как местность Гранкино ему все больше и больше нравится, но жалуется немножко на Алину. В Каменку не приедет; говорит, что А[лина] И[вановна] сделалась так неласкова и раздражительна с Колей, что оставлять его с ней нельзя.
