Вера Вас[ильевна] очень мила. Бывает у нас ежедневно. Она совсем ''опридворилась''. Из уст её так и вылетают имена её августейших друзей и знакомых. Говоря о государе, она принимает тот грустно-задумчивый вид, который Толстой подметил у ''Анны Павловны Шерер'' в «Войне и мире».

Славу Богу, все более или менее здоровы, хотя всё-таки Саша имеет довольно усталый вид и должна воздержаться от продолжения курса. С бедной Натальей Андреевной случилось сегодня большое горе. Недели две тому назад, по моей просьбе, она взяла на воспитание воробьиного птенца. Сначала птенец был очень противен; потом мало-помалу стал оперяться и сделался очень мил. Все, кроме Левы, ужасно полюбили бедненького ''Мимишку'', и он постоянно переходил с рук на руки. Вчера он заболел, сделался очень слаб, перестал принимать пищу и, наконец, сегодня околел. Наталья Андреевна целый день плачет. Мне самому грустно по милой птичке, которая была такая ручная, так любила, когда её ласкали и целовали.

Вчера все ездили в вербовский лес, который очень вырос. Пили чай и гуляли. Между нами будь сказано, я несколько боюсь ''В[еры] В[асильевны]'', которая (может быть, это мне только кажется) не прочь устраивать со мной ''à parte'' и как будто ещё не совсем забыла старую слабость.

Сегодня вечером ожидается французская гувернантка для ''Таси'', по фамилии ''M[ademois]elle Готье''.
