On Saturday, [[Tolya]] left, and in the most gloomy mood. Saburov had been playing various dirty tricks on him, and, amongst other things, demanded that he, despite the most earnest requests, be back by 1st August, i.e. he refused a request to defer this by a few days. But [[Tolya]] was delayed through no fault of his own, and various unpleasantness awaited him in [[Petersburg]]. He was so upset when he left that I had to promise to visit him in [[Petersburg]] soon. Therefore, my obligations to you and to [[Nadezhda Filaretovna]] have been further complicated by the need to keep my word to [[Tolya]]. Today I'm going to [[Brailov]] with [[Kotek]], who spent a week here and made a most favourable impression on everyone. We'll be making almost the entire journey together. How long I'll stay at [[Brailov]], and when I'll make it to you, is unknown. If I see from [[Anatoly]]'s letters that matters are going well, then I'll visit you first, and then go to him in [[Piter]]; if he's very depressed, then I'll go to him first, and I won't make it to [[Grankino]] before the middle of September. 	Не помню, Модя, писал ли я тебе про наш спектакль? Он прошёл довольно благополучно, только Влад[имир] Андр[еевич] напился пьян для храбрости и страшно фиглярничал. В антракте Котек играл на скрипке. Народу было видимо-невидимо. Потом был блестящий бал. На другой день мы встали все в 2 часа и у меня целый день болела голова. В субботу уехал Толя, и в самом мрачном расположении духа. Сабуров ему строит разные пакости и между прочим потребовал его, несмотря на самые убедительные просьбы, к 1-му августу, т. е. отказал в просьбе опоздать несколько дней. Но Толя опоздал поневоле, и его ожидают в Петербурге разные неприятности. Он был до того расстроен при отъезде, что я должен был дать ему слово съездить к нему в скором времени в Петербург. Таким образом, обязательства мои перед тобой и Н[адеждой] ф[иларетовной] ещё усложнились необходимостью исполнить данное Толе слово. Сегодня я еду в Браилов вместе с Котеком, который пробыл неделю здесь и произвёл на всех очень благоприятное впечатление. Почти весь путь мы сделаем вместе. 			The last few days we've had an indescribable commotion here, with arrivals and departures. ''Kitty Grothus'' spent a whole week here with her two lovely daughters. Ivan Ivanovich Butakov arrived. Due to [[Kotek]]'s presence, there is daily music-making and visits to the big house. I am inexpressibly tired of all this, and shall be glad to find myself alone in ''[[Simaki]]'', but the [[Nadezhda Filaretovna]]'s proximity will be very awkward for me.

			Nikolay Lvovich's situation is the same, i.e. desperate, but on the 11th, despite all [[Nikolay Dmitryevich]]'s admonitions, he is leaving for [[Moscow]]. There is no possibility at all of stopping him.

			We had news about [[Laroche]] that he's run away with some girl to Helsingfors, and abandoned his wife completely.

Все последние дни у нас тут невыразимая суета, приезды и отъезды. Целую неделю провела здесь ''Китти Гротхус'' с прелестными двумя дочерьми. Приехал Ив[ан] Ив[ановисч] Бутаков. По случаю присутствия Котека происходят ежедневные музицировать и хождения в гости в большой дом. Я невыразимо утомлён всем этим и буду рад очутиться один в ''Симакове'', но близость Н[адежды] Ф[иларетовны] меня будет сильно стеснять.

Ник[олай] Льв[ович] в том же положении, т. е. отчаянном, но 11 числа, несмотря на все увещевания Н[иколая] Дм[итриевича], уезжает в Москву. Нет никакой возможности удержать его.

Об Лароше имеются сведения, что он убежал с какой-то девицей в Гельсингфорс и жену свою бросил окончательно.

Пиши мне: ''Одесская ж[елезная] д[орога], станция Жмеринка, оттуда в Браилов''. Целую. Прости безалаберность письма. Мне ещё нужно накатать множество писем.
