[[Moscow]] has become an utterly foreign land to me. I travelled very well and safely all the way to [[Kharkov]]. Since there were 12 hours remaining from the arrival of the express train until the evening train departed in the direction of [[Grankino]], I stayed at the Grand Hôtel, where I had invited [[Kondratyev]] by telegraph the day before. He replied that he couldn't come, which I was actually glad about, because I was afraid that he would keep me an extra day in [[Kharkov]]. The impending journey to [[Grankino]] alarmed me; the train arrived at Alekseyvka station at 4 o'clock in the morning, the uncertainty of whether the horses would be there, the need to travel more than 50 miles on a cold night — all of this seemed terrifying to me. Because of this I was out of sorts all day. After a decent dinner at the hotel, I went to the theatre, where "''Faust''" was on, with Makarova as Margarite. I liked ''Makarova'' very much for her attractiveness and fine voice, ''Borisov'' (Mephistopheles) for his voice, and everyone else for the decent ensemble. At 12.30 I left [[Kharkov]]. At 4 o'clock I arrived in Alekseyevka. It was awfully cold. The horses were waiting for me, but, through some misunderstanding, instead of a phaeton and a troika, there was some astonishingly uncomfortable ''cart''. For the whole 26 miles to Tsiglerovka, I was exhausted and trembling from the cold. Here, the manager ''Schoff'' welcomed me warmly, and gave me a wonderful phaeton with four horses, in which I rode the remaining 26 miles to [[Grankino]]. Due to another misunderstanding, my telegram had not been received here, and my appearance was a surprise. [[Modya]] was busy with [[Nikolay Konradi\|Kolya]] when I came in, and there was no end of astonishment. ''[[Herman Karlovich]]'' is here, but he's leaving tomorrow. [[Modest]] was intending to go to [[Kamenka]] on ''Thursday'', and was wondering where I was. Now everything has worked out splendidly. We're leaving together on Thursday. Now I want to ascertain to what extent [[Laroche]] is in need of money, and if this is indeed very bad (it cannot be extreme, since she has plenty of diamonds), then I shall have to help, although now I only have 70 rubles in my pocket. Москва стала для меня окончательно чужбиной. Ехал очень хорошо и благополучно до самого Харькова. Так как от прихода курьерского поезда до отхода вечернего поезда по направлению к Гранкино оставалось 12 часов, то я остановился в гостинице Grand Hôtel, куда пригласил накануне по телеграфу Кондратьева. Он отвечал, что приехать не может, чему я, собственно, был рад, ибо боялся, что он меня задержит на лишний день в Харькове. Предстоящая поездка в Гранкино пугала меня; приезд поезда на ст[анцию] Алексеевку в 4 ч[аса] ночи, неизвестность, будут ли ~~Лошади~~, необходимость проехать 80 вёрст в холодную ночь — все это мне казалось страшным. Поэтому был весь день не в духе. После порядочного обеда в отеле ходил в театр, где шёл «''Фауст''» с Макаровой в Маргарите.
