You probably know that ''[[Colonne]]'', at Madame [[Meck]]'s request, will be playing my [[Symphony No. 4\|4th Symphony]]. Please, golubchik, keep this between us so that no-one knows that this symphony was imposed on him at a {{und\|price}}. Speaking of impositions, don't forget to write to ''Lucca'' regarding the opera. This is also between us. Милый друг! Вчера получил твоё письмо и очень был им обрадован. Господи, какое счастье быть вне отечества; только переехавши границу я вздохнул свободно и почувствовал себя свободным, счастливым и покойным! (Дорогой удирал от Иосифа Венявского, ехавшего со мной на одном поезде, и, чтобы отделаться от него, даже выдумал, что еду не один, а с женщиной, причём он хитро подмигнул, как бы говоря: «Ишь ты, канашка!».) Но как я ни счастлив удрать из России, а всё-таки друзьям всегда останусь верен и посему желаю об них иметь известия и прошу тебя не оставлять меня своими милейшими письмами.

Я пока буду доканчивать вчерне свой концерт и лишь несколько позднее примусь за пересмотр старых вещей и пришлю тебе в своё время список вещей, которые желал бы пересмотреть и кои попрошу тебя прислать мне. Прежде же всего займусь 2-ой симфонией, которую хочу основательно переделать. Тебе известно, вероятно, что ''Colonne'', по просьбе M[ada]me Мекк, будет играть мою 4[-ю] симфонию. Пожалуйста, голубчик, сделай, чтоб это осталось между нами и чтобы не знали, что эта симфония ему навязана ценою {{und2|дeнег}}! Кстати, по поводу навязывания не забудь написать ''Lucc'е'' насчёт оперы. И тоже это между нами.

Я живу в Париже в том самом помещении, где был в прошлом году. Останусь здесь ещё недели две и потом поеду в Италию, дабы соединиться с братом Модестом, который на всю зиму уехал туда.

«Онегина» Батюшкиной работы тебе должен был переслать Бессель. Получил ли ты его?
