Вчера я получил от Левы депешу, что Папаше очень худо. Мне показалось очень бессовестным и эгоистичным сидеть здесь в покое, когда Вы все в вечной тревоге. Кроме того, я думал, что можно ещё будет застать Папашу в живых. Поэтому я телеграфировал Леве, что прошу их решить, ехать ли мне тотчас в Петербург, и заплатил за ответ. Между тем сегодня утром получил твою депешу с известием о том, что все кончено. В этой же депеше ты говоришь, что мне не нужно ехать Петербург; она — как бы ответ на мою вчерашнюю телеграмму к Леве, которой он, впрочем, не получил. Сейчас мне пришли оказать, что моя телеграмма не дошла до Левы, ибо из Петербурга дали знать, что M[onsieu]r Léon Davidof не нашлось по указанному адресу. Это тем более удивительно, что накануне депеша к тому же Леве дошла.

Как бы то ни было, но я ещё раз телеграфировать о том же уже не нахожу нужным.
