I'm just so overwhelmed with work that it's hard to find the time to write, and that's the reason why I so rarely make you happy with my letters. Here's what I've been doing:

1) Arranging Anton Rubinstein's overture "Ivan The Terrible" for 4 hands .<br/>2) Finishing off and correcting the folksongs for 4 hands .<br/>3) Writing the overture to "Romeo and Juliet" .<br/>4) Preparing lectures for my new course on form .

Besides all this I have to give up a lot of my time to Konstantinov , who is briefly over from Odessa, and has completely taken possession of me. I sit at home quite a lot, although in the evenings I almost always go out, mostly with Bibikov who calls for me.

Anyway, don't think badly of me; the two of us just support one another on the thorny path of virtue and try to stay as pure as doves. I hardly ever see Gruzinsky or Petashenka ; the latter used to drop by with criminal intent to observe the Cadet Corps situated across the way, but I've been trying to rid myself from these compromising visits, with some success.

The Italian opera is in full swing here: the Marchisios are most remarkable singers, but I'm unable to enjoy listening to anyone after Artôt . Incidentally, this exceptionally delightful lady is in Petersburg and has been living there for one-and-a-half months (I'm not exactly sure why); try to see her, and when you do, just think how I nearly became tied to her by the bonds of Hymen.

I'm very glad that you liked Menshikova . I've always been one of the few Muscovites on good terms with her. As for my opera , I've not heard a thing; I'm starting to think it will never be put on; however, I've just written Gedeonov a letter asking him to give me firm information about my opera's fate; it seems to me that if I'd been bolder and more practical then it would have been on by now.

The other day your former friend Petrovsky showed up drunk; Agafon did well not to let him in.

I've received just one letter from Volodya in Paris; he is well and, it seems, having a good time with Ryumin .

I kiss you my dear Modka, and insist on a letter from you.
Yours, P. Tchaikovsky
Bibikov sends you kisses.
