Друг мой! посылаю тебе «''Орлеанскую деву''». Из сделанных в этом экземпляре сокращений и изменений я бы желал сохранить только следующие два (они уже сделаны и в подлинной моей партитуре, которую прошу тебя достать из Дирекции).

''Сокращение'' и изменение 1-ое: Действие II-оe № 12 между стр[аницами] 166-173.

Сокращение и изменение 2-ое: Действие III-е № 20. Финал. Стр[аницы] 370-407. Вот два существенных изменения, которые я желал бы оставить. Кроме их, ввиду петербургских условий постановки, были сделаны некоторые сокращения и перетасовки партий, которые имеют только местное значение. Итак, все остальное остаётся по-старому. Но уж если ты решишься сделать 2-ое издание, то, кстати, нужно исправить кое-какие опечатки, а также, согласно требованию цензуры, переделать Архиепископа в Кардиналы. Все поправки я отметил и на заглавном листе выставил страницы, на коих они имеются. В случае если текст будет переводиться, нужно чтобы Архиепископ остался таковым, следовательно ''Erzbischop'' (как у Шиллер), и в сцене, где он показывает Иоaнне крест, так и должно остаться, ибо цензурное запрещение не относится к немцам.

''Необходимо на стр[аницах]: 449, 450, 451, 452 — напечатать сделанные мною 2 примечания и знаки. Таким образом, мы и театральной цензуре угодим и избегнем надобности сокращать музыку, которою в этом месте я дорожу''.
