My dear friend!
Today I received your kind, warm, and encouraging letter, and I am ineffably grateful to you for your friendly concern for me. You are quite right when you say that if my apathy towards compositional work is a temporary one, then this will be a beneficial break for me. I shall keep on hoping that my desire to write music will return, and in my next opera I shall try to make use of all the points learnt from my previous attempts. But for the time being I am still resting, and it is only little by little that I am occupying myself with the study of our ancient church hymns and am making attempts to transcribe them for four-part chorus. The result of these efforts will be an All-Night Vigil, in which I should like to contribute, if but a little, towards the sobering up of our church music, which has been distorted by the untalented and banal editions of the [Imperial] Chapel. In this field there is a lot that could be achieved by Russian composers, if only the Chapel and Mr Bakhmetyev didn't try to meddle in every possible way.

Eduard Frantsevich! Is it really true that Kyuster and his awful Lukashevich are going to remain at the helm of the theatre administration? If so, then there is good reason to despair.

It is most likely that I shall head for Prague if my opera is staged there, although I am worried in advance by the thought that I shall have to be in the limelight and demonstrate my complete inability to be of any use to the production .

I hope that you are taking advantage of your break from your usual chores to compose. With all my heart I wish you success in your work and in all your undertakings! Keep well, my dear friend! Your ardently affectionate,
