Поздравляю с возвращением на родное пепелище.

Я занимаюсь теперь Бортнянским усиленно, дабы скорее отделаться от этой ужасной работы. Часто ругаюсь, злюсь и собираюсь отказаться от начатого дела, главнейшим образом вследствие крайней антипатичности содержания пресловутых творений Бортн[янского], но потом успокаиваюсь, и дело будет кончено, как и все дела, которые я начинаю. Разве только могу когда-нибудь лопнуть со злости. Предстоит ещё по крайней мере месяца три усидчивой работы. Удивляюсь, какая тебе охота издавать эту пакость. Впрочем, как знаешь.

Но, однако, важнее всего, чтобы я получил, наконец, все, что составляет ''полное собрание''; между тем в том, что мне прислали недавно, оказалось лишь очень немного недостающих №№-ров; остальное — повторение уже имевшихся у меня творений Б[ортнянского]. Таким образом, многие вещи я имею теперь в двух или даже в 3-х экземплярах, а огромного количества других не имею вовсе. Потрудись, пожалуйста, озаботиться, чтобы, наконец, мне прислали все, что нужно. Прилагаю на отдельном листе список недостающих №№-ров.

Вчера приехал Толя. Мне жалко его. По рассказам его вижу, что ему в Москве на сей раз было очень приятно жить летом, а теперь ему предстоит совсем не весёлое житье.

С болью сердца думаю о нашей несчастной Консерватории. Отчего до сих пор не объявляют о предстоящем учебном годе? Вообще, что-то будет?

Не найдёте ли вы полезным, чтобы я стоял в списке профессоров по теории, однако же с тем, что с 1-го сентября я беру отпуск на неопределённое время. Это, конечно, маленькое надувательство, но ''никакие силы всего мира не могут заставить меня в этом году состоять в Консерватории на действительной службе'', и откровенно тебе скажу, что только крайность может принудить меня прибегнуть к этому средству добывания хлеба. Может быть, это эгоистично, но, с другой стороны, подумай, какую пользу будет приносить учитель, ненавидящий своё дело, ненавидящий своих учеников, смотрящий в лес и стремящийся при первой возможности удрать? Прибавь к этому, что, склонный к хандре, я буду томиться в Москве, которую в глубине души ужасно люблю, но которая по многим причинам покамест ещё невозможное для меня местожительство. Своим томлением буду наводить на всех уныние, начну пьянствовать, испорчу жизнь и себе и другим. Ну одним словом, не знаю, что дальше будет, — а теперь не пойду в ''класс ни за что на свете''. ''Считаться'' же профессором готов сколько угодно, и, если моё имя может чуточку придать обаяние Консерватории, даю разрешение пользоваться им сколько угодно.

Вероятно, ты уже не получил моего письма, адресованного в Киссинген, в коем я разъяснял тебе причину, почему застрял в Каменке. Напиши мне, имело ли на твоё здоровье благоприятное влияние киссингенское лечение.

I'm now assiduously occupied with the [[Bortnyansky]], in order to rid myself of this awful work as quickly as possible. I often become enraged, curse and prepare to abandon what I've begun, mainly due to an extreme antipathy to the notorious content of [[Bortnyansky]]'s creations, but then I'll calm down and it will all be over, just as it is every time I begin something. I really could explode with rage. There are still at least three months of diligent work in store. I wonder about your desire to publish this rubbish. However, you know best.

Do I find it helpful for me to be on the list of professors of theory, notwithstanding the fact that from 1st September I'm taking an indefinite leave of absence? This is of course a white lie, but ''there is no force on earth that could compel me to actively serve in my position at the Conservatory this year'', and I tell you frankly that only in extremis could I be forced to resort to this means of earning a crust. Perhaps this is selfish, but on the other hand, imagine what good will come from a teacher who loathes his job, loathes his students, gazes out into the woods, and tries to escape at the first opportunity. Add to this that, with my disposition towards melancholy, I'll be pining away in [[Moscow]], which in the depths of my soul I love terribly, but which for many reasons is still for now an impossible place for me to live. Watching me pine away will make everyone miserable, I'll start to drink, and ruin life for myself and others. Well, in short, I don't know what will happen next, but right now I won't go to ''classes for anything in the world''. I'm prepared to ''consider myself'' a professor so far as it is expedient, and if my name can lend a little allure to the Conservatory, let them make use of it so much as they see fit.

You probably haven't received my letter addressed to Kissingen, in which I explained to you the reasons why I was stuck at [[Kamenka]]. Write to me whether the Kissingen treatment has had a beneficial effect on your health.
