It consists of the following: I rise at 6 o'clock; I wake [[Vladimir Shilovsky\|Volodya]], who goes off to drink the water, while I go to the baths; at 8 o'clock we drink coffee, then I walk, read or write letters; at 1 o'clock we have lunch at the table d'hôte, at 4 o'clock we go to music, from 6 to 8 we go for a stroll; we drink tea, play, and go to bed at 10 o'clock. You see that I'm leading a completely idle life, and I confess that I've no desire to work. 			The other day in Mannheim (a town situated 2 hours away from [[Soden]]) there was a large music festival on the occasion of [[Beethoven]]'s centenary. It went on for 2 days, and we were there throughout. The programme was most interesting, and the performances astonishing. There was a congress of several orchestras from towns along the Rhine; the choir consisted of 400 people; I've never heard such a mighty and excellently trained choir. The famous composer Lachner conducted. Incidentally, this was the first time I'd heard [[Beethoven]]'s "Missa solemnis" performed. This is a work of musical genius. But then there are awfully few other musical pleasures. The orchestra in [[Soden]] isn't large, and it doesn't play too badly, but the programmes are awful. [[Vladimir Shilovsky\|Volodya]] and I urged them to learn [[Glinka]]'s "Kamarinskaya", which they'll be playing for the first time tomorrow.

			I visited [[Wiesbaden]] for a meeting with [[Nikolay Rubinstein\|N. Rubinstein]], and found him losing his money at roulette; this didn't prevent us from having a very pleasant day. He doesn't lose heart, and is convinced that he won't leave [[Wiesbaden]] without breaking the bank. I miss you and all our lot very, very much; every hour I recall the time I spent so pleasantly last year in [[Kamenka]]. I would give so much now to make the journey to the big wood, like last year, with tea, a fire, and so on. We'll be staying here for another 1½ weeks and then setting off for Switzerland, where I'm expecting to have a great deal of pleasure and inspiration. А между тем в течение целого месяца, что я заграницей, не получив от тебя ни единой строчки, я начинаю беспокоиться. А Модест просто сердит меня; имел об нем стороной известие, что он до половины июня был ещё в Питере, но он сам не дал себе труда написать. Я же ему писал в Каменку; там ли он? Да и ты не в Каменке ли? Не случилось ли чего? Я начинаю тосковать.

В Содене жизнь идёт однообразно и, по правде, скучно; но зато здоровье моё в отличном состоянии. Я беру щелочные ванны, которые чувствительно хорошо на меня действуют, да кроме того, мне чрезвычайно полезен образ жизни, к[ото]рый я здесь веду. Он состоит в следующем: встаю в 6 часов; бужу Володю, к[ото]рый идёт пить воды, а я в ванну; в 8 часов пьём кофе, затем гуляю, читаю или пишу письма; в 1 [час] обедаем за табльдотом, в 4 часа идём на музыку, от 6 до 8 гуляем; пьём чай, играем, а в 10-м часу ложимся. Ты видишь, что я веду жизнь вполне праздную, да, признаться, и охоты работать нет никакой.

На днях в Мангейме (город, лежащий на расстоянии 2-х часов от Содена) был большой музыкальный фестиваль по случаю столетней годовщины Бетховена. Он продолжался 2 дня, и мы на нем были. Программа весьма интересная, а исполнение удивительное. Это был съезд нескольких оркестров из прирейнских городов; хор состоял из 400 человек; такого могучего и превосходно выученного хора я ещё никогда не слышал. Дирижировал известный композитор Лахнер. Между прочим, я в первый раз слышал очень трудную по исполнению «Missa solemnis» Бетховена. Это одно из гениальнейших музыкальных произведений. Зато других музыкальных удовольствии ужасно мало. Оркестр в Содене невелик, играет очень недурно, но программы ужасные. Мы с Володей заставили их выучить «Камаринскую» Глинки, которую они завтра будут играть в первый раз.

Ездил в Висбаден на свидание с Н. Рубинштейном, застал его проигрывавшим в рулетку свои последние деньги; это не помешало нам провести очень приятный день. Он не унывает и убеждён, что не уедет из Висбадена, не сорвав банка. Я очень и очень тоскую об тебе и всех наших; ежечасно вспоминаю время, столь приятно проведённое в прошлом году в Каменке. Много бы я дал теперь, чтобы совершить поездку в большой лес, подобную прошлогодним, с чаем, костром и т. п. Мы здесь останемся ещё недели 1½ и отправимся в Швеицарию, где я жду для себя много удовольствия и вдохновения. Когда возвращусь в Россию, ещё не знаю.
