What is the point of having the Estonians, Jews and that whole procession of foreigners? Why should [[Anton Rubinstein\|Rubinstein]]'s muse choose to illustrate the regrettable ethnographic fact that Russia is somewhat piecemeal and hasn't yet coalesced into a strong and unified entity? Душа моя! Меня удержали на несколько дней в Киеве. Погода здесь — совсем лето; деревья все давно покрылись зеленью, ландыши цветут, купанье в Днепре открылось, и я сейчас иду купаться.

Хочу тебе сказать и напомнить несколько вещей:

1) Мазурки Лауба или напечатай, или отошли ему.

2) Вещи ''Света'' сделаны со вкусом и любовью, — но несколько по-дилетантски. Их можно напечатать, — но несколько переделавши. ''Свет'' этот умер нынче летом, и я от матери его получил известие, что он c любовью говорил обо мне на смертном одре. Меня трогает это, и хотелось бы доставить удовольствие старушке, а потому прошу тебя прислать мне его переложение, и я сделаю в Каменке то, что не мог сделать в Москве, т. е. хорошенько просмотрю и отделаю. Там есть между прочим романс Рубинштейна «''Отворите мне темницу''». ''Имеешь ли ты право печатать аранжемент этого романса?''

3) В экземпляре «''России''», который ты мне дал, нашёлся приколотый листочек с указанием двух ошибок. Чуть ли этот листочек написан не рукой самого Антона. Видел ли ты это? Исправлены ли эти ошибки? На всякий случай посылаю тебе этот листочек. «''Россия''» мне нисколько не нравится. Только такой ограниченный, чтобы не сказать глупый, человек может написать подобный вздор. К чему тут эстонцы, евреи и вся эта процессия инородцев? Для чего муза Рубинштейна иллюстрировала тот грустный этнографический факт, что Россия немножко разношёрстна и ещё не слилась в нечто цельное и сильное своим единством? Прославляет ли он этот факт или скорбит о том? Я думаю, что он сам этого не понимает!
