	I'm writing just a few words to you to say that I've arrived at [[Kamenka]] today and found here all the proofs sent previously. As a result of my incessant vacillation it's only now, almost a month after they were sent, that I'm starting on the proofs. But I promise you to work assiduously and to finish them very soon. My sister has just returned from Karlsbad, and on the way she called at [[Prague]] to hear "''[[The Maid of Orleans]]''", or as she is called there, "''Panna {{sic\|Orleanskà\|orleánská}}''". It transpires that the opera was given in a wooden, open-air summer theatre, and that the performance and the whole setting, although very fastidious, were spartan. The male and female singers were all plain and old — but good enough. In general, although one should not forget that a serious opera production only takes place ''in the summer'' in third-rate theatres, one should not overemphasise that important fact, and nevertheless from everything my sister reported it was clear that those engaged in the production had taken many pains and efforts — which makes me exceptionally happy, and even rather touched. Пишу тебе только несколько слов, чтобы сказать, что я сегодня приехал в Каменку и нашёл здесь все прежде присланные корректуры. Вследствие моих бесконечных колебаний произошло то, что только через месяц почти по высылке — я примусь за корректуру. Но обещаюсь тебе работать усердно и в самом скором времени окончить её. Сестра только что вернулась из Карлсбада и по дороге заехала в Прагу, чтобы услышать «''Орлеанскую деву''», или, как она там называется, «''Panna {{sic|Orleanskà|orleánská}}''». Оказывается, что опера шла в летнем, деревянном, балаганоподобном театре, что исполнение и вся обстановка хотя очень старательны, но бедноваты. Певицы и певцы все некрасивые и старые — но недурные. Вообще, — хотя не следует преувеличивать значения этого факта и не забывать, что серьёзная постановка серьёзной оперы не происходит ''летом'' иначе, как в третьестепенных театрах, тем не менее, по всему, что рассказывает сестра, — видно, что те, которые занялись постановкой, принесли много забот и старания — и это меня чрезвычайно радует и даже трогает.
