	In view of a complete absence of dramatic sopranos, the Petersburg Directorate have very reasonably suggested that I rewrite the part of ''[[The Maid of Orleans]]'' for mezzo-soprano, and both [[Nápravník]] and Kamenskaya are urging be to do this. I have to agree, because this is reasonable. I'm now working from early in the morning until late at night; this requires whole numbers to be rewritten and re-orchestrated, and all of this is required as soon as possible. I'm just taking a moment to inform you of this. Naturally, I don't want this to be a ''definitive'' reworking at all, and the opera's ''genuine, original'' form will remain as before, because they'll find a soprano one day. But if, against expectations, the opera is successful enough to make it into the [[Petersburg]] repertoire, then perhaps it will eventually be possible to append ''variations'' to the existing edition, in the event that the part has to be performed by a ''mezzo-soprano'' voice. Until I finish this unbearable task, I can neither think nor write about anything. Ввиду совершенного отсутствия драматических сопрано, Дирекция петер6ургск[ая] очень резонно предложила мне переделать партию ''Орл[еанской] девы'' для меццо-сопрано, а Направник и Каменская очень просят меня это сделать. Я должен согласится, ибо это резонно. Теперь работаю с раннего утра до позднего вечера; приходится целые нумера переинструментовать и переделать, и все это требуется как можно скорее. Улучил минутку, чтобы тебя о том уведомить. Разумеется, я вовсе не желаю ''окончательной'' переделки и ''настоящий, подлинный'' вид оперы останется прежний, ибо найдутся же когда-нибудь и сопрано. Но если, паче чаяния, опера будет иметь успехи сделается в Петербурге репертуарною, можно будет когда-нибудь прибавить к существующему изданию ''вариянты'' на случай исполнения партии голосом ''mezzo-soprano''. Пока не кончу этой несносной работы, ни о чем не могу ни думать, ни писать.

Прости, что лишь несколько слов пишу.
